My receipe is very simple and always gets a good review at home!! Very Happy

5 large potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters

4 carrotts, peeled and sliced

1 onion, peeled and sliced

1 tin of low salt corned beef, cubed.

1 beef stock cube

Put the potatoes, carrotts and onions into a pan and cover with cold water, then add a beef stock cube, I cook it on a lowish heat all day and once the potatoes and carrotts are softening I add the corned beef and cook for another few hours. If you think the consistentcy is too thin you could add corn flour to thicken it up.

xx

Mine varies everytime I make it.

My 'winter' one is very similar to lesleys but I add pearl barley to mine and bung it all in a slow cooker and mash it all up at the end Smile

My 'summer' one I add onions, carrots, sweetcorn, peppers, potatoes and a tin of tomatoes and add te corned beef right at the very end.

Some times I add spices too depending what mood I'm in at the time. I do tend to add garlic to both recipes though. I love garlic Very Happy

hmmm I don't think so, its nothing like what I think as a proper 'stew'???
A stew is actual bits of meat and veg in a 'gravy' kind of sauce that it's cooked in - hash looks dry to me

ermm I don't think everyone here is actually cooking a proper hash...actually doing corned beef stew!??!!

I thought it was dry cooked - which it is - but Lesley you say about thickening it up and thats its like a stew - but that's not how any of the recipes say to make it like this one http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/515023

Stew here is chunks of meat, traditionally lamb but I prefer beef, with potato (mashed or unmashed up to you), chunks of carrot, onions, in a thick gravy.... I love it with bread and butter to soak up the juices! Very Happy

I've only had proper stuff once and it was in an ancient pub in Manchester which is renowned for it's corned beef hash.

It's pieces of beef that is very salty (not stuff in a tin) and it was served with a poached egg. It wasn't very nice to be honest.

But the way I make it is mash a tin of corned beef with mash and put cheese in the top and melt it in the oven Smile

The way id describe a stew is a 'one pot' meal..be it with a gravy or dry.
I see Irish 'stew' as a stodge rather than a stew. Obviously I've not had the proper Irish version but the ones i've had have never had a lot of stewy sauce Laughing
I do my corned beef hash in the slow cooker with stock and raw veg and pearl barley, by the time its done its a stodge (ie; you can stand your fork in it Laughing )
By the looks of it, everyone has their own idea of corned beef hash!
