This morning we are absconding from playgroup as it is at the Salvation Army, which is a Christian organisation and therefore they do a nativity play and all attending would be expected to get involved. I wouldn't have minded Imogen being in it not one bit, but Dom is strongly against it. He is Atheist, I take more of a humanist line but to be fair I'm not really an anything-ist.
[Just as an aside - he tolerates xmas because I insist on it, I follow the herd and celebrate the passing of the darkest part of the year and enjoy celebrate the love of family and friends]
Dom's objection is that it is being delivered as fact rather than fiction or theory and in the same vein, The Billy Goats Gruff would be equally objectionble if the organisers really believed in a troll and talking goats.
This year Imogen is clueless but next year probably not, and there will definitely come a time when she might feel excluded. Sooooo my question is this:
Ladies with little ones doing nativity plays - how have they got involved in it? Is it school, playgroup or something else? Is there an expectation of participation? Are there kids in the same group who don't get involved? Are there kids who you wouldn't expect to be involved (obviously muslim for example) involved in it? And is it delivered to the children as fact, fiction or theory?
Discuss!!
