Are Nativity Plays Still Compulsory? _
PostSubject: Are Nativity Plays Still Compulsory?   Are Nativity Plays Still Compulsory? EmptyMon Dec 17, 2012 9:43 pm

This morning we are absconding from playgroup as it is at the Salvation Army, which is a Christian organisation and therefore they do a nativity play and all attending would be expected to get involved. I wouldn't have minded Imogen being in it not one bit, but Dom is strongly against it. He is Atheist, I take more of a humanist line but to be fair I'm not really an anything-ist.

[Just as an aside - he tolerates xmas because I insist on it, I follow the herd and celebrate the passing of the darkest part of the year and enjoy celebrate the love of family and friends]

Dom's objection is that it is being delivered as fact rather than fiction or theory and in the same vein, The Billy Goats Gruff would be equally objectionble if the organisers really believed in a troll and talking goats.

This year Imogen is clueless but next year probably not, and there will definitely come a time when she might feel excluded. Sooooo my question is this:

Ladies with little ones doing nativity plays - how have they got involved in it? Is it school, playgroup or something else? Is there an expectation of participation? Are there kids in the same group who don't get involved? Are there kids who you wouldn't expect to be involved (obviously muslim for example) involved in it? And is it delivered to the children as fact, fiction or theory?

Discuss!!

My kids have always been involved in nativitys since nursery age. The whole class/year is involved in the play whether it be a main part, a part in the choir or just shaking some bells but they do take part. In my experience the whole religious bit totally goes over their head and all they see is they are taking part in something that mummy is coming to watch and its fun. I am like the least religious person ever but would never stop them taking part as i dont want them to feel like they are missing out. On the other hand i did once pull chelsea from a religious education class for a few weeks as they were showing them how to pray to allah which she herself wasnt happy about and neither was i. She sat the lessons out in the library until they had finished that particular bit of useless education. So i can kinda see where Doms coming from. Although up to the age where they stop doing nativities (end of juniors) i dont think the kids see it in a religious sense at all xx

Oh and no they arent compulsory you have every right to stop your child doing something in school/playgroup.nursery if your not happy about it but unless you intend to keep them off school for every rehearsal and the actual nativity i can imagine they would be pretty upset x

I am not a believer (just sitting on the fence really - I dont actually think that Mary really got up the duff without having sex!).
If it were me, I would want my kids to be involved. Christmas for me is about them having fun and spending time with family.
I was always in the nativity as a kid, and it didnt influence me one bit, but if I was 'that child' who wasnt allowed to be involved, I would have probably grown up with an issue with it.
Tell him its just a bit of fun, dressing up, and to get over it x

Jamie got involved but I'm a Christian so it doesn't bother me. You can pull them out but I'm not sure how it will work at school. They're supposed to take part in a religious act of worship every day so they may use that to say that she has to be in it. I should imagine its also going to make her feel quite excluded. We have a jw at school and there's loads she's not allowed to do (anything political for a start) and she hates it

I would never stop my child being part of the show!!...I'd never exclude my child from it only to be sat at the side - I'd be embarrassed and gutted for said child!
The muslims don't partake in carol concerts, easter etc but in my school they are few. But they are expected to do religious studies lessons.

For the sake of a 15 minute concert I'd tell oh he can believe what he likes but your daughter is taking part! Smile
