When I write an event there is no drop down box thingy for me to add it to the calendar

Errrrrrrrrm i tried it as well so i dunno??

You should see an option for calender, that may need the + clicked to open it, under the message box

Create the event in the calendar (which opens a thread in events) and it saves a post to the event forum & makes the event in the calander

OR when you create a thread anywhere in the forum and add a calendar date to it

I only get options which include adding signature to post etc or polls. Nothing for a calender though?
