If you got into a taxi (not a black cab - the normal car type ones - private hire etc) alone would you get in the front or back?? and would you chat to the driver or sit with your paper/mag/phone etc?

I've just been watching the wright stuff and they reckon that northerners get in the front and have a chat with the driver whereas southerners get in the back and read a paper or text etc.

This has facinated me because I would never dream of getting in the back if I was alone and I would feel rude not chatting to the driver (not saying it is rude - just the way it is up here i think). Even in a black cab they usually open the window for a chat.

Just wondering if the 'stereotype' holds out and if so - where the divide is in the country?

I'm in the south, I'd never get in the front alone but I always chat to the driver.

It would feel rude not to sit and chat! Maybe the taxi drivers her are more friendly! I've never met a quiet taxi driver they're all dead nice and chatty.

Im south and sit in the back without talking, but thats because im shy and dont know what to say lol. Although if I get a taxi from my local asda where I have got to know the drivers I will sit in the front and chat.

South and I sit in the back. Will talk if they do but am happier to sit in silence

I always sit in the back but always talk to the driver. If i am with the girls god help the driver with our convo topics lol

I use to always have the same driver so i knew him so i sat in the front chatting away x
But if i didnt know the driver im south and in the back x Will talk if the driver is nice but some are moody gits xx

I'm going to be awkward and say I am a northerner living down south.

I weigh up the driver then decide whether front or back. If they look friendly enough I get in the front.

I natter if they do (London cabbies are the best chatters I have found).

What is it about cabbies that they have opinions on pretty much everything?

I sit in the back and only chat if they do. I'm quite wary of getting in taxi's alone, we've had a fair few attacks round here from cab drivers on lone women so I always try and get in a black cab if I can
