TBH I don't agree with letting them have their babies stay in prison with them. Its not fair on the child either.
IMHO them women are in there to be punished not to la di da with their children. Sorry if I sound harsh but I really disagree with the program

depends on the crime and how long they going to be in prison, if its a case of they will always be in prison or for a very long time, then i think its unfair on the child, because they only allowed upto 3 or 5 i believe, think that wouldnt be fair on the kid, to be there and then taken from the parent.

but if they there for a short period, it can only help with bonding.

I didn't watch it and tbh Im not sure what I think.... I think if you are a prisoner your there to be punished and having your children in with you is just going to make it that bit easier.... do people get pregnant with the hope they will get off prison sentences?
And isn't it against human rights to imprison another person i.e. a child for nothing?

Not to mention that if that childs friends ever find out it grew up in a prison I imagine it would get very picked on.

I think i'm anti it.. but then I suppose each individual has a different circumstance so.... who knows but maybe another punishment would be more suitable in these situations.

Wrote out a whole big reply and it deleted! Grr!

Havent watched program yet so am just commenting from my own knowledge.

I believe babies should stay with their mothers up until a certain age - 2 or 3 maybe. And like Claire says it should depend on sentence length - though even then some regular contact arrangement should be made.

It all depends on how you view prisions - are they there simply to punish? Or are they there to promote behaviour changes as well? I believe that perhaps keeping their child with them encourages women to change their behaviour and not get into further trouble. Most importantly I think people need to think about the baby. It has been proven that children need to form attatchments to a primary carer in the 1st 2 years of life for them to be able to form menaningful relationships with others when they are adults, if this doesnt happen children can be very damaged. Foster placements arent always stable, so in away breaking the bond on the child is punishing them more than being in prison would. Its affecting their whole future.

Jade I think if kids were going to pick on a child they would pick on it for their mum being in prison - regardless if they were there or not.

Maybe il change my mind when I watch it.

I watched it. I think if the mother genuinely wants to keep the baby with them and would be devastated if it was taken away then they should be able to keep them but only if their sentence isn't too long. As said the child needs to bond with their mother during their first years of life. They were very strict over who they let into the unit and no one with any violence in their past was allowed in.

I suppose it does depend on why they are in there too. Been thinking about this and I am sure part of the 'qualification' to get into the baby bit was to have 18 months or less on your sentence so baby wouldn't be in prison long enough to remember. When I wrote last reply I forgot about this x
