i have asked my inlaws to remove photos of elijah from their facebooks (and tbh we don't have access to them so im not happy knowing they probably have photos of us on there too)...don't you think this kind of thing is a bit creepy??????

It doesn't change anything with regards your privacy settings really - I don't get where the story is coming from with that angle tbh. If your pictures are set to private/'friends only' then nobody can see them unless you add them as a friend. Just because it gives you a suggestion as to who to tag doesn't mean anybody else can see them or that they would come up in a google search.

I wouldn't worry about family having pics of you on there either tbh. As you don't have your own account then you can't be tagged in family pics even if they wanted to so nothing will ever be linked back to your email address etc. Even if you were on fb and somebody tagged you in a picture that wasn't private you are well within your right to 'untag' yourself so no problem really or maybe I'm missing something?

It doesn't really bother me to be honest. People tend to tag their friends in photos anyway and my friends tend to tag Jamie as me so I can easily see pics of him. I have my privacy settings so only friends can see things and my friends are the same. I accepted a long time ago that I can't control what other people do. The girls tend to take pictures of staff on school trips (particularly if you fall asleep on the coach) and I've no doubt they all end up on their facebook. Saying that I am a little more careful about the pics I put on with Jamie in so there's none on of him naked

i guess my problem is possibly more that i don't know what pictures are on there and i definitely don't know who they have added as friends (they recently got in trouble from fil's work for putting a pic of someones payslip on there?!) so maybe it's more of an issue for me - im not sure they should have the right to take pictures and share them with whoever they want?! i guess we are very private and want to keep it that way......perhaps this news story just sort of reaffirmed that for me

i can see how it would be more convenient if you have a heap of pictures like the night out or something, but it still seems a bit weird to me (as does the rest of fb )

I think you should get yourself an account Mari - just so you can keep an eye on the inlaws

But why on earth would anybody publish a picture of someones payslip on fb? that's just a bit dim!

hahah i know, because he is a bit dim, then he came here and complained that he should be able to put whatever he wants on there (errr NO!).

But back to the OP - I do find the whole facial recognition thing a bit weird in itself but for the purpose that fb have employed I think it's pretty harmless and just a bit of fun.

I also hate it when I find someone has added a pic of me or my kids without tagging me or making me aware. SD is awful for it, I would never add a pic of someones child without first asking and then tagging them in it.

ahh funny enough I put pics on yesterday and before I tagged OH it came up already... I was like HUH?? I didnt put that in! was a bit baffled how it knew who he was.

I think its good too, now I can see any pics that go up that I didnt know I was in. xx

I just thought it was a clever bit of software that could recognise faces and suggest names against them.

Mari - your best bet with the in-laws would be to have an fb account with them as friends but then block them from seeing any of your stuff. You don't have to have any other friends if you prefer too.

we have had a sneaky peek by ahem possibly unethical means - i got an email saying they didn't have a fb anymore so had to check it out and lo and behold...a pile of pics of elijah, me and my husband?!!!

anyway, it wasn't meant to be (another) rant about those maniacs, i just find myself getting uneasy when clever machines can recognise our faces

It doesnt bother me too much atm as I have all my albums private.

BUT if you type my name into google images on the first page a few rows down there is a pic of Caitlin at about 10 months . All my albums are private, and all I can think of is I possibly was still uploading to my old bebo account then. Im not very comfortable with her being under google images, but then again you would have to google my name - and then recognise her to know its her.
Nothings really 100% private on social networking.

My laptop has facial recognition option instead of password. I cant use it but as when I try and set it up apparently it cant see my face as a face - I must look horrendously bad these days!

Well on my name its my avatar from here plus Gills and Siobhans. On my banda name it seems to be a load of avatars, a fish covered in piercings and osama bin laden...

for the photo id, it scares me, we have a lot of issues at work with parents whose children removed from their care and they put on fb that their kids been kidnapped and if anyone sees them to contact them....

also if a child is adopted, adopters are advised not to put any pics on web, because of this technology.

so its scarey, but i still put my family pics on, but my settings are high on fb anyway.
