I don't know if any of you saw on the news about the explosions in Cyprus?

Well basically it blew up the main electricity station and the Island was without power for about 6 hours yesterday.

Because it supplies most of the Islands power and is damaged we have been told they can only provide 50% of the electricity we need and they will be turning off everyones power for 2 hours per day (randomly) and they might not tell us when.

I'm terrified of having no electricity when it comes to dinner time for Tyler, or if it's his bed time (because he needs the air con in his room to at least cool it down for him to be able to sleep in it) whilst I will struggle in the heat at least I can in the worse case scenario go and sit in the pool all evening in the dark and quiet to cool down... and can live off take aways if I need to but what about my little man Sad

so what would you do without electricity? It's made me realise how much we rely on it!

Can you prepare meals that he can eat cold and stick them in the fridge (although what's going to happen to that when the electricity goes off). No idea about the air con though. You'd think they'd at least be able to say this area will be off for this two hours and so on so you can prepare for it

I think its disgusting that they are not advising you when they will cut you off, at least then you could prepare for it - especially for people with young children.

I'm not sure what suggest, perhaps on that day maybe a cold meal - like pasta salad and cold meats etc? I suppose it would have to be pre-packed though as you wouldnt know if or when they cut you off.

Hmmm its a tough one, I wouldnt know what I'd do without electricity if I'm honest - probably just panic Laughing

cook of pastas or anything that he can eat cold for dinner , and if they do cut power before dinner always ensure you have a bag of ice in the freezer then you can pop it in a bag/bucket and keep his food cool until tea time ?

how long do you think before power is up and running completely , i know its not ideal but if you can get takeaways ( how come they keep their power ? ) then if you have to feed him some so be it, it wont kill him its just a case of needs must and all that x x

Michelle I think the government have said they are trying not to affect the tourist areas so whilst not ALL the take aways will be open I imagine I can get a mcdonals or a KFC if I need to lol. Places have generators too as power cuts are quite common.

I think they said eventually they will be able to tell us when the cuts will be but for right now they don't know. I think the capital Nicosia has already had it's cut this morning.

the cypriot lady I work with seemed to think it would be between 5 and 7 when everyone is leaving work... well thats' all well and good for people who eat there dinner late but thats right bang smack around tylers dinner and bed time :/

I do have a camping gas stove so can boil veg and pasta and things like that (although would take about 2 hours probably haha) - but Tyler won't eat the same thing two days running lol. I'm more worried about cooling his room down though it gets over 30 in the day and needs to be cooler for him to sleep in.

It's a scary thought! it was bad enough when the electric went at half 5 in the morning and the room started getting warmer and warmer. Doesn't help that it's about to he hottest part of the year too eeek. I might move to england for a few months!

On and i remember the water cuts, we would always have to remember to save a glass off water to brush our teeth with at night, make sure the water cooler was full and the kettle!Oh and save a bucket of water to flush the loo with!

Do you have a BBQ? You can cook quite a bit on that, even jacket potatoes wrapped in foil and you can put pans on it to heat stuff up, with his room keep it dark whilst the suns out and the windows shut, I know that sounds daft but it will keep the heat out, then as soon as the sun goes down, open the windows. Make sure he's cool before you put him to bed, so a cool shower or bath or sponge down to lower his body temp so he falls asleep quicker, and if you're concerned during the night maybe a cold water spray or damp flannel to sponge him down.
Hope it doesn't last too long for you x

thanks mandy we're lucky in t hat our house has shutters so we do keep it all shut up during the day and Tylers room generally stays cooler where he's had the air con on overnight.

We just had our first cut - it was only an hour and unfortunately hadn't had chance to cool anything down beforehand as I just got in from work but the first 30 mins were ok then we got in the pool. Tyler hated it and I think he's tired but its too late for a nap now but it just came on as I was about to resort to going out in the car and driving round for an hour.

Fingers crossed that's it for us for today!

oh and yes OH said about using the BBQ for food. I think it's more the heat for Tyler than anything.

Apparently the road where my office is WONT be affected as it's such a main commercial road so at least we can go there if we need to,

Terri they're doing water cuts too as they've had to turn off the desalination plants but we normally have enough in our tank for toilet flushes and baths etc and normally have some bottled water lying around for drinking!

nightmare though.

I was going to suggest maybe getting yourself a smallish petrol/oil generator? and then you could possibly have atleast a fan on or something?
