Archie has brought a library book home from school. It waas a childs book illustrated with some lovely pictures, a story all about frogs and tadpoles. So we sit down to read it and i got halfway through the book when it started telling you about frog spawn and how the male covers the females eggs with sperm then they are fertilized!!! He is 4 years old!! He got this book from nursery!!! We stopped reading when he asked me what sperm was!!!

OMG, I'm all for being honest with your children but Jesus Christ why the hell would that be appropriate for nursery! The poor kid just thinks he's got a nice book about froggies. It honestly baffles me!

OMG why the hell is that sort of book in nursary, actually thinking about it, it could be because they want sex ed in schools for kids aged 5 and 6 so its preparing them. but still I would take it back tomorrow and say dont let him have books of this nature he is too young, I still skirt about the issue with my step son and he is 11 lol

Maybe im weird but that wouldnt bother me. I think at that age children would take it as something that frogs use to make tadpoles and wouldnt be thinking of penises and sex like we might when we hear the word sperm. Maybe i'l change my views when Caitlin is older and starts brightly discussing the birds and the bee's with a stranger on a bus but nope atm Id be perfectly fine with that! What age did you talk to C & T about sex? I think id prefer Caitlin to get it in drips and drabs than do the whole lets sit down thing when they are 10 when they prob have already had their head filled with nonsense in the playground. X

They were about 8 when the subject came up. I dont have a problem with it as such as in a sexual sense but i dont want to be asked what is sperm from a 4 year old. What do i say! What if he asks someone else!!!

I know thats the problem I suppose He'd probably leave out the whole frog part too Tell him sperms water that has seeds in that can help grow baby tadpoles. Tell him the egg is like a flower and the daddy frog has to water it every so often so that the tadpoles are born, just like you need to water a flower to make it grow big...... God its harder than you'd think.... When I was little my mum told me mummys had a seed in their tummy and daddy watered it and thats how babies were made. I probably thought adults pissed in eachother for fun X

pmsl, another one laughing at the computer screen! I'd play merry hell with them Mara, must be in there by mistake - it's not appropriate at all for a nursery child. Imagine if he's chatting to his friends re-telling the story - (it is rather like something you'd read in the paper though - imagining a picture of you looking really disappointed with a photo of a frog lifecycle behind you and some kind of headline including the word 'outrage' somewhere ) There are some words that are just don't need to be in their vocabulary until a certain age / maturity - sperm being one of them. Fair play to him if can sound it out with the 'er' sound in too though
