paternity leave question _
PostSubject: paternity leave question   paternity leave question EmptyWed Jan 04, 2012 9:44 pm

i am not at all clued up on paternity leave , when i had D OH had just been discharged from RAF and was still on medical leave.

anyways ,,
OH obviously will get paternity leave when this little man is born , his boss was talking about how he still had about 130 hours of hols left that are to be used by April ( he only works 30 hours a week ) , there is no way he will get these hols as they are on limited staff and OH is a team leader. They don't carry over but his boss is pushing with head office that because paternity pay is full on x amount of days then reduces ( i don't know if this is right or not ? ) he is pushing that head office allow him to carry over 2 weeks of his hols but not take them so to speak but whilst on paternity leave they pay him his holidays so he is not on reduced money
i want to think that his boss is trying to do him a favour and keep us up financially wise but then part of me is thinking hmm are they just trying to scam him outta his hols
I am not sure how paternity leave works as i am sure it was not in place when i had my first 2.

paternity leave question _
PostSubject: Re: paternity leave question   paternity leave question EmptyWed Jan 04, 2012 9:52 pm

I think it has changed now, but I last paid paternity to an employee back in may. And they got 2 weeks at around £124 per week and it was for only two weeks.

His employer can not refuse and say he can not take his holiday then say he can't carry it over.

As for them being short I used to do this and think oh no they'll be short but it's for his bosses to sort out he's entitled to his leave.

As for the holiday and paternity question it's sounds like they are saying instead of taking paternity pay to take the time off and use his holiday instead which he can do if he wants. If they agree to carry the reminding over that's fine. He could always ask for it to be paid to him without taking it. They might not agree but then some companies do

paternity leave question _
PostSubject: Re: paternity leave question   paternity leave question EmptyWed Jan 04, 2012 9:53 pm

i think that statutory allowance for paternity leave it 2 weeks - so he should get full pay for that no???

a lot of people save leave to stay off a bit longer/be able to go off earlier if needs be, so your oh could do that - if he isn't going to actually be able to take his hols because there isn't enough time he should get paid for them anyway no??? unless it's your oh's fault he hasn't taken them...

but yeah i dont THINK his paternity leave and holiday time should be counted as one and the same - oh but wait, when are you due? Laughing if they are giving him the 2 weeks hols after april that's fine cos he wouldn't have been getting them anyway, but i do think paternity is meant to be paid leave..........perhaps im wrong.

i would think of it as 2 seperate issues 1) he is entitled to paternity leave regardless (but check if its paid or not) and 2) he has earned his holiday, so if its his workplace's fault he hasn't taken them, he should get paid the hours, if its his own fault he hasn't taken them he will just lose them.

Mari is right there. Also if he has not applied for the leave then he could lose it all.

If he has applied and been turned down they he will be due the leave.

Paternity is a statutory payment lasting 2 weeks.

He can take hold before and after paternity or he can chose to just take leave and no paternity.

Probs been answered enough for you but just wanted to say we decided to take holiday as Matt had loads left. His work were fine with him taking paternity (well they have no choice) but as it's £124 a week he would have gotten, not his usual £400 we thought it was better to use his holiday as with just the paternity it would have left us really short that month. I don't know if it was the best decision but financially it worked for us and he couldn't have taken the holiday another time so meant he didn't loose it.

I guess that is what OH boss is trying to say.. use the holiday you would otherwise loose and get full pay rather than £124 a week

thanks for replies :0)

just spoke to OH about ti , £ 124 a week for 2 weeks would not cover our rent for month at £283 !! never mind any other bills
he spoke to someone in headoffice and they are going to carry them over and we will use them for paternity leave Smile
oh and he has booked hols for end of this month so we are off down to the in -laws for a wee break, weather permitting :0 )

happy days , the rest i think he might use as days here and there like when i have glucose test and what not Smile

That's what Adam did as we couldn't really afford for him to take the reduced wage. His work let him carry some over (his leave runs Jan-Dec).

Glad you've worked it out

Gah, some companies are really tight, arent they? You would think for 2 weeks that they would just pay out full pay.

James gets full pay for his 2 weeks maternity leave (thank god, as we seem to have so many kids!) x
