| actually 5 hours later aid but could do with advice
earlier on i was moving a stool and it slipped - you know how the legs go and the seat bit slams onto the floor? well elijah's big toe was right there. he can walk now (he did scream for almost an hour but calmed down for chocolate buttons) adn the swelling is going down...it hit right on the end of the nailbed (at the toe so the quick?) which bled and bled and has bled through his sock now as he obviously won't sit with it up..
his nail might come off and its obviously going to be really tender but we are 90% it isn't broken (couldn't decide about a+e but in the end he stopped crying, started walking tentatively and we thought a+e in a taxi would be more stressful for him) - is there anything we can do for him???
i want to try and dress it to protect it, mr.mari says let it breath, i think it needs to be soaked as its very bloody and we can't see it properly but are we best to just give it a wipe (if he lets us touch it), should we ice it? calpol?
i feel like such a turd but it couldn't be helped really, he is poorly anyway poor sausage!!! it looks SO sore (i am actually making his wear a sock cos it looks awful just now) |

| I think Mario may be the one for this, but I would just give him some Calpol to take away the pain for a bit. Im sure he will be fine, bless him xx |

| I'd probably soak it and give him calpol. Isn't Mr Mari a nurse though or did I invent that |

| haha yes he is a nurse, but i don't think they study much in terms of 19 month olds with squashed toes, its a bit different when its your own |

| Id give him calpol and brufen(for pain but also for swelling) regularly for 48 hours even if he isnt complaining of pain, pop his foot in a bath to clean it up so you can see the wound. Unless its obv gaping leave it uncovered would be my thought though if hes getting it grubby from walking/playing cover it to prevent infection.
Even if hes broke it is unlikely to have owt done about it we usually just buddy strap where you tape it to the adjacent toe between the knuckle joints so as to act as a support but still use the range of motion of the toe so if he seems really uncomfortable and you decide against a and e thats an option for you but if hes walking on it its probably not needed.
Lastly just cos you said its on the big toe keep an eye out for sub ungual haemotoma-you can get a collection of blood under the toe nail which can be quite painful, if he gets a black lump under the toe nail and it seems painful from it you will need to get that checked as it will need trefining to remove it. I expect it woulda come up by now though

| thanks ladies, mario he did have a lot of bleeding under his toenail, but as its right on the quick the skin is broken just below too so any blood that was collecting just squished out when he was walking - he is walking fine today/dropping books on it/stubbing it/flying down the slide and it looks a lot better now the swelling has gone down. the bottom of the nail has gone black and its bled a bit in the night but hoping thats relieved the pressure as he isn't saying its sore anymore so hopefully that's it!!!(until he forgets and slams it in a door of course) |
