First topic message reminder :

so, we thought we could put it off for another 2years or so, but the occupational therapist has put in a referral to the wheelchair services for us already

i really don't know if i'm ready for the stares and nosy looks from people seeing her in a wheelchair considering wheelchairs - Page 2 Icon_pale on top of that lewis isn't walking yet so we'd have to have a wheelchair and a stroller, making it imposs for one of us to just 'nip out' with the kids

argh!!! i really thought this wouldn't happen for ages yet Sad

Wil has the Mura 3 and the handlebar thing at front is good for stopping them sliding out but it could be uncomfortable for her if she is slid down against it the whole time.

Will she be capable of using an electric wheelchair eventually to give her a bit more independence? My mum worked with a little boy with severe celebral palsy who only had use of one arm and he was taught to use one when he was 7.

no Gil, Rett's syndrome gives them an uncontrollable hand writhing movement which leaves their hands basically useless...lily-ann literally constantly does this and can't hold or touch anything for more than a few seconds so i can't see there is ever any chance of her being able to use an electric one Sad

i appreciate the link lisa! but it's a single, so we'd still have the problem of lewis! lol

i test ran alasdair in one that a friend had, they are more comfortable than they look but it didnt fit on to my silver cross Sad

lots of electric wheelchairs can be used with the mouth rather than hand Smile

they are designed for people who's muscles don't work well (I've seen them mostly for people with cerebral palsy who's hand/arm muscles aren't well controlled and things like huntington's where there are lots of ticks and jerks) - hopefully you will find someone who you can get along with at your local council's occupational therapy department, they don't generally like to spend money but there are some really good things available if you find someone who is knowledgeable Smile

Some of the things on here are quite interesting, I bet you could modify support cushions and things to make a soft 'frame' for the seat of a pushchair? I wouldn't buy from this link though they are bloody expensive! http://www.allardycehealthcare.co.uk/products.asp?catid=8&catname=Mobility
