Hello

Just wondered if anyone had taken Paxil (10mg) for depression/anxiety before? My doctor has prescribed them for me and it's the first time I've taken anything like this. I guess I'm just a bit nervous, especially as I'm still bfing (the doctor says it's no problem to take them while bfing but still, I'm anxious - that's what the pills are for! haha)

Ive taken them before, and for me they werent he best tablet! My dad however took them for years and found them great!

Its only a low dose so theres absolutely no harm seeing how they sit with you.

My experience at work in the common antidepressants (im a pharmacy tech) is the following

1. Prozac - Is an 'upper' so great for depression, but not fab for anxiety/panic.

2. Sertraline - Is a good middle of the road one, brill for anxiety & depression (and the most known safety in BF'ing)

3. Paroxetine (paxil) - Is great for anxiety, because it can make the patient feel quite 'numb to the world'.......this is the reason i didnt like it!

However my dad stuck with it and said that you get used to it.

Shayne took paxil and it made him feel zombie like..even with the adjusted dosages. He would so often "zone-out" and it was hard to keep his attention..also found him to be somewhat emotionless on it. Was extremely happy the day he finally came off of them. xxx

Thanks for the advice! I'm more worried about the effect they'd have on Milo as I'm breastfeeding, rather than the effect they'd have on me if that makes sense You know, I can deal with me feeling rubbish, but couldn't deal with making Milo feel rubbish.

At the moment, Milo is down to 2 bf feeds a day, one before his midday nap and one before bedtime - it's the only way he'll fall asleep! If he could fall asleep on his own, i would quit bfing in a flash! Anyway, I'm thinking of cutting down to just one feed before bed, so I need to find some way to make him sleep without bfing him to sleep So if he's only on 1 feed a day, and i take the medication after that feed, it should reduce anything passing into my milk and into him shouldn't it? My doctor says it's fine to use during breastfeeding anyway, but i can't help worrying. I mean, even when i wasn't pregnant or breastfeeding, i never used to even take cold medicine! I really really don't like medicine But i also really really don't like feeling how i'm feeling.

LisaM, the doctor thought Paxil would be best for me as he diagnosed mild depression and post natal ocd (post natal ocd being by far the strongest), and reckoned that was the best choice to knock out both of those. Does that sound about right? Thanks for all the advice!

Jen, sorry to hear Shayne had a rubbish experience I bet you were relieved when he stopped them!
