| Tyler's been out of sorts since the weekend, we put it down to teething as he wasn't ill.. he was just off his food and a bit grizzly in the afternoon. This afternoon he woke up with a temperature of around 38 so OH gave him calpol which I think bought the temp down but it came back up 3 hours later... Tyler had a little bit of dinner and he just fel hotter and hotter and then started little jerks every 30 seconds or so... we tried to give him some calprofen which he didnt have and then he threw up what dinner he ate. We got him to drink some liquid and did get most of the calprofen down him and gave him a quick rinse and he's now in bed with a vest and a fan on him Is this the right thing to do? he's never had a temperature and Im a bit worried feel like I should sit in his room with him. He had the pneumoccocal (?) vaccine about 10 days ago do you think that could have anything to do with it? |

| Only had one bad case of temp that wouldn't come down. We: Alternate ibuprofen & calpol Strip down to vest / nappy Offer plenty water / fluids Try ice lollies for soothing / calming if upset Cooled teether as alternative ^ Cool flannel on forehead / wiping head every so often Cool shower (with me) if appropriate

| You are doing the right thing, strip him down to his nappy, fan on and calpol and ibuprofen. Do you have a weight for him? only the bottle underestimates what kids can have to be safe and i can give you a safe weight related dosage if you know his weight in kilogrammes that will help. I give C the generic dose unless she is really bad then i do the weight dose And yes it may be vaccine related |

| is it ok to put him to bed though? haha I think I know the answer Im just being paranoid i think he was only sick because he choked on the medicine he started to get goose bumps in the bath so we took him straight out and dried and into a vest for bed... haven't heard a peep from him since think i best check on him argh! then i can wash the sick out of my hair *nice* mario he weighs 9.5 kilo's and he had 5ml calpol at 2.30 and just had 2.5ml of calprofen (although I dont think he took it all) should I give him calpol again later or just let him sleep? |

| Child 1–6 years
20–30 mg/kg as a single dose then 15–20 mg/kg every 6–8 hours; max. 90 mg/kg daily in divided doses for 48 hours
Right so he is 9.5 kilos so at 20 mg per kg thats 190mg four times a day which comes in at 80 mg/kg daily which is totally safe to give for 48 hours. Calpol is 120 mg in 5ml for the 2 month plus stuff and should say this on the front of the bottle so 190mg is 7.91 mls.
I know its difficult to measure that out so go for 7.5mls 4 times a day (it says 6 hourly as its a higher dosage) as thats 180mg so pretty close. Do that for 48 hours then if you are still needing to give it we go by 10-15 mg/kg at work for single or ongoing dosages. Which would be back to his 5mls regular dosage and follow up with gp if still going on after 48 hours. In between top him up with ibuprofen which can also be given 6 hourly so you can give together safely if you need to or if you want to alternate it you then have options to give something every 3 hours
Eg 6am calpol 7.5
9am ibuprofen 2.5
12pm calpol 7.5
3pm ibuprofen 2.5
6pm calpol 7.5
9pm ibuprofen 2.5
12am calpol 7.5
hope that helps |

| Any time honey. Its hard sometimes to keep on top of a fever using bottle dosages cos they are generic so have to account for small skinny kids so are very conservative which is why we use the formula above there for kids coming in at work and even then ive gone on the low side for you as i cant actually see your LO to do a proper triage. The jerky arms and legs sound like what we call rigors to me where you get shaking as bodys way of trying to control temp but kids arent good at managing their own temps so its important to keep on top of it. Sounds like you are doing everything right for him and his body just needs time to fight it off. Keep up the meds and keeping him in minimal clothes, fans and plenty o sleep and he will be his usual self in no time i hope xxx |

| thank you so much! you;ve helped put my mind at rest a bit I'll just be checking on him every 30 mins or summit haha. Its hard to keep his room temp right at the mo im in cyprus and its 27 in there which he's normally ok in a sleep suit in but i assume its better to keep him cooler (but not cold)! oh well if the worse comes to the worse and I freak out Ive got my pediatricians mobile so im sure she'll come up and see him (for a small fortune no doubt) thank you xx |
