| Iv heard that before. I thought it was for girls aswell. I think its only a guestimate though. At my P1 health check the school nurse predicted my adult height to be about 6ft, and im 5ft 7 or 8. Another way Iv heard of calculating predicted adult height is add together mum & dads height in inches, divide by 2 and then add 2.5inches. Eg a child will be roughly 2.5 inches taller than the average height of parents. Only a rough guide though as obviously sibblings are varying heights.... |

| I know, they grow so quick. Does the 2.5inch thing give the same result as the other way. Looks like Rowan will be tall, if he's 3ft 1 he could be 6ft 2 as an adult. |

Doesnt seem to work here that one as that would make C 5 foot 8 or 9 and id be surprised if she ends up more n 5 foot 4 as shes only petite like me. By her book if she carries on following 25th centile for height like shes doing it will make her 5 foot 4 maybe 5 foot 5. Might measure her when she gets to 2 though and see what she is. |

Ooo, Me and my OH are 5ft 3 and 5ft 10 (bit of pointless info for you there ) Olivers quite tall now, when we meet people they always assume he's much older than he is. Will have to measure him soon, he hasn't been measured for yonks |

| I suppose a way of testing the ave +2.5 inches theory is to do it using your own parents heights and see how it compares to yours. For me I should be 5ft 8.5. (Mum 5ft 3ish & I think dad was 5ft 9), and im just under 5ft 8 so it works out right. It wouldnt work at all for my cousins though as one is 5ft 3 (F), another 5ft 8 (M) and the eldest 6 ft 2 (M). Their parents are about 5ft 9 and 6ft 1. I dont why their kids are quite short in comparison, both grannys were only about 5ft so maybe thats why.... |

| In the back of the red book it has that average calculation thing, so I did it
Its really vague though as Izzys comes as being anywhere between 25th and 91st centile, 5'3" - 5'10"
According to her current height which is bang on 50th centile, she should be 163.5cm which is the same as me pretty much, I am 5'5" |

| My mum and Dad did the calculation for me when I was young and should have been 6ft! As it happens I'm 5ft 8 which is 1 inch shorter than the calculation mentioned previously. Amelia is going to be tall. She was just over the 96th centile last time she was measured. |

I dont why their kids are quite short in comparison, both grannys were only about 5ft so maybe thats why.... Im not entirely sure it would work or every generation would get taller and taller theoretically. I found this on ivillage though There are many "formulas" people have said are accurate in predicting how tall your child will be. Some say take the height at the second birthday and multiply it by two. Others have suggested simply adding the parents' heights and dividing by two. And still others have more elaborate schemes that take into account what month they were born in, the color of their eyes, and how tall they were at birth. But while some of these may have at one time been based upon some scientific ideas, most are only a reasonable guess at best. Unfortunately, physicians can really do no better. We do know that genetic factors are of the greatest importance and influence the final adult height the most. And after having studied thousands of children and their parents, the following formula has been developed to assist in figuring out if growth is on track to reach that "genetic potential." The following equations are used by most endocrinologists to figure out the goal height in the children they are evaluating: FOR BOYS
- Take each parent's height and add them together. If using the english system, total the number of inches. If using metric, add the centimeters together.
- Divide that number by 2
- Add 2.5 inches to that number if using the english system. Add 6.5 centimeters to the number if using metric.
- This number is the midparental height for boys
- This number plus or minus 4 inches (or plus/minus 10 centimeters) is the range in which you could expect your son to fall.
Example:Mom is 5'4" (64 inches or 162.5 centimeters); Dad is 6'1" (73 in. or 185.5 cm.) Adding the two together = 137 in. or 348 cm. Divide that by two = 68.5 in. or 174 cm Add 2.5 in. or 6.5 cm. = 71 in. or 180.5 cm. You could expect this boy to eventually be 5'11" plus or minus 4 in. or 180.5 cm. plus or minus 10 cm. FOR GIRLS
- Take each parent's height and add them together. If using the english system, total the number of inches. If using metric, add the centimeters together.
- Divide that number by 2
- Subtract 2.5 inches to that number if using the english system Subtract 6.5 centimeters to the number if using metric
- This number is the midparental height for girls
- This number plus or minus 4 inches (or plus/minus 10 centimeters) is the range in which you could expect your daughter to fall.
Similar Example:Mom is 5'4" (64 inches or 162.5 centimeters); Dad is 6'1" (73 in. or 185.5 cm.) Adding the two together = 137 in. or 348 cm. Divide that by two = 68.5 in. or 174 cm. Subtract 2.5 in. or 6.5 cm. = 66 in. or 167.5 cm. You could expect this girl to eventually be 5'6" plus or minus 4 in. or 167.5 cm. plus or minus 10 cm. I hope this helps. So my mums 5-2 and my dad 5-8 so their average is five five minus 2.5 is 5-2.5 and im 5-3. Neil is 5-10 and im 5-3 so our average is 5-6.5 subtract 2.5 is 5-4 which is what C should end up by the line in her book too |
