Do you think up til now its been too easy to get this benefit?

I love my MIL, but I have to say I don't understand why she gets it 100%, she gets a disability allowance too. Her problem is with her lower back - and I know for sure she gets a lot of pain from it BUT does that mean she can't do ANY job?! Until last year she had been having to get checked regularly to carry on getting the IB...then her doctor permanently signed her onto DA as well.

Personally I think it would be better for them to have tried to get her doing a job she could do - I can't see why she couldn't work on a til in shop for example?
I am pretty sure when they start these assessments next year they will tell her she has to get a job.

My friends dad was a school teacher, he got accused of something by a pupil and although found not guilty- the 'stress' caused to him rendered him unable to ANY job apparently...this i find shocking....how does stress stop you doing any job?! He was on benefits for years, although now too old to work - he is the kind of person I look at and think 'you are having a laugh at everyone's expense!'

I think this is a great idea, Canada has a similar problem, people who are capable of working..choosing not to because of some ailment that rightly doesn't make them disabled enough to live off the system. Now there are those who defo need this service. What would happen if there was none of these services..available to anyone? I can pretty much guarantee a large portion of them would be working if this were the case! Assessing the disabled accordingly is wonderful! It's a blessing living in country where we can look after those that are down and out..having a rough time or need a hand for a spell...but pull up your socks..and get on with it..don't make this a life style choice! (Anyone throwing refuse, please make them potatoes and cabbages..running low) xxx

I teach adults with learning difficulties and disabilities and the whole point of our course is to encourage independence and help our students into work. Some of my students are very severely disabled but would do anything to work and we spend a long time matching them up with suitable work. When I see what my students go through it makes me mad that there are people who wouldn't even try to find employment! I'm well aware that there are people who really can't work but there are lots of people who could! xxx

exactly- its not a physical barrier with some - its that they don't want to work!
It just goes to show that with the right support people like those you work with can go to work - which makes those people on IB with bad backs and stress look extremely lazy!

I've no doubt that the majority of people are genuinely unable to work - but I do think we need a kick up the arse when it comes to sorting out those ones from the ones who just want a lazy life!

I know how easy it could be to get on IB - my coccyx and hip pain is terrible, in fact had I not left my office job for college I would have been leaving soon anyway as the long periods sat on my butt were killing me...although my cleaning job is seriously bad for my hips, its a lose lose situation which ever job I take...but I would NEVER consider claiming for IB, and you know what I am pretty sure I'd get it cos my doctor was happy to sign me off work for a long time had I gone that route.

Society is too accepting of lazy people who play on their ailments - not that long ago they'd have had no choice but to go to work!

This is so true. People who will actually find it most difficult both physically and mentally seem to be the ones who work the hardest as they have a desire to work and be independent. It makes me so angry when peole get DA and ICB for things that shouldn't actually stop them from doing some form of work. Even if it be a few hours a week. I know people who have been paralysed in accidents who faught to get a job and work. They obviously have special requirments and cannot always work full time but I know that they work damn hard whilst they are able.

I think sometimes there are jobs that people can do but they're not the type of job they wish to do. For example someone who suffers from stress could definitely take a job that requires little mental effort or responsibility, even on part time hours.

I really do agree that each case should be dealt with on an individual basis and things are not always cut and dried.

I'm happy that this country is finally cracking down on benefits! I think the money should be spent on NHS and education.

My dad is a total layabout. he has a heart condition and thickened arteries or something like that and his bp rises causing him to become unwell. I feel like this I think to myself come on get motivated and find yourself a job that wont stress you out. working doing anything is got to be healthier for you than sitting on your arse doing nothing.

my mil is also on the sick due to stress. it seriously does my head in.

Not to mention the feeling of "self pride" when it comes to working. Anyone who has worked knows this feeling, the sense of independence and not owing anyone squat. I miss that feeling...the only benefits I've ever been on is EI for two months, and mat leave, which back in the day was only 6 months. The system is in place for people who truly need it, and considering what countries we live in, there is no reason that people can't find work to suit them. FFS if he can do something with his life there are people who should feel ashamed of themselves, wallowing in self pity and poverty cos they can't be bothered

I am totally behind you on this one. I dont see why people should claim when there must be 'a' job that they are capable of doing.

My ex's mum used to claim everything under the sun, because she once got beat up (by his dad) and she claims she was 1 inch shorter on one leg.

We could look at claiming DDA for Aimee, but we dont, mainly because in my opinion, she is just as capable as the next child of the same age, so it wouldnt seem right at the moment. Yes, we do have to give her meds 3 times a day, which can be a right pain in the backside, but I dont feel at the moment we are put out enough to claim anything for her.

When she is old enough, she will get a job, just like everybody else. The only time I will encourage her to take time out is when she is pregnant, due to the strain on her heart xx

I totally agree too.
My mum's ex was a painter and decorator by trade but ended up with housemaids knee, so was unable to do the job any longer and was on IB. He had surgery on his knees which made day to day life more manageable but he still claimed IB. My mum used to have a go at him about getting another job, but he refused cos he claimed he was a skilled painter and decorator No, you is a lazy *bleep* Needless to say my mum soon left him

My bro lost his job a long time ago after braking his knee cap, but on to of that he was diagnosed with suffering with dipression too..he was IB for a long time, but then he decided to quite the meds but was still claiming We all made our views clear and he openly admits that he is a 'bum!' He now claims nothing, zilch, zip! by his own choice. He earns his pennies by doing odd jobs. Although we would prefer he got a more secure job at least he's not claiming from the state cos he chooses to be a 'bum'
