well yesterday i gave alfie his first try of banana. i kept putting it in his hand for him to try himself and he wouldnt do it so i thought id hold it for him and ive him a taste so he knows its food. after that he did pick it up himself but rather than sucking on it he went straight for the chomp. he chomped quite a big chunk off and started cockling on it. i dont think it was big enuf for him to choke on but it shocked me. is this normal? im wary of trying again now?

Aww bless him - was he actually choking or gagging hun? Bananas are very claggy and stick to the roof of your mouth if you shove too much in - babies have a very strong gag reflex to prevent them choking, just takes a bit of getting used to for them. It is common hun, just keep an eye on him and try cutting it into little chunks to start with and makes them bigger as he gets more used to it. He'll be fine.

Funny you should say that though coz Hannah had her first taste of banana yesterday courtesy of thomas. Poor lil thing has never had any solids and there she was sucking like mad on this banana Shocked she was actually loving it - licking her lips etc - made me feel guilty for taking it away. She's not ready for weaning just yet but makes me wonder if i can just let her have a little taste of the odd thing now and then? scratch

you could try one of these too http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Babies-R-Us/Feeding/Weaning/Plates-and-Bowls/Bruin-Blue-Safety-First-Feeder%280077985%29 or a nuby nibbler? i remember reading ages ago that they are really good for things like banana - alfie could still feed himself but couldn't take too much at once?

thanks mari i think i may invest in one of these as he does seem to like to feed himself but typically he doesnt just like to suck at things -he goes straight for the chomp haha.

debs i think it was more of a gag and his eyes went red and started watering haha.bless him!!
