i know he's not quite a toddler yet but seeing as he's one next week i thought this section would be more apropriate
anyhow, what is you opinionon letting toddlers/babies climb the stairs, i obv have a stair gate so oliver cant get to them but earlier oh was holding oliver, well satying very close whilst he crawled the first few stairs, as iv dont with him before(he goes tumble tots and they have ladders/stairs there for them to climb)...i see it as if he learnes now with me there then he will learn to do it safely...plus builds confidence etc...
but mil had a go at oh saying we shouldnt let him near the stairs yet, he can learn to do it when he can walk properly and know how to bum shuffle back down
what is you honest opinion, am i out of order thinking its ok??? xx

My lo has been climbing the stairs, with someone behind her, since she was about 1 - she wasn't walking then. I've never had a problem with her doing it and she never does it on her own because the gate is always shut. As long as he's supervised I don't see what the problem is.

I have always let Oliver do the stairs independently (with me behind him)He was doing the stairs before he could properly crawl. He loves it and I do believe it builds confidence. Oliver walks up the stairs now, whilst holding onto the wall/banister. He still doesn't bum shuffle down, but he can crawl down backwards. And he has recently just learnt to walk down them hold on to the banister and a lil help from me Very Happy

I think its a good thing..it builds independence, confidence and gives them a sense of achievement too.

My LO managed to do the stairs once when I was in the kitchen..proppa shat myself to find him at the top, but am glad that he'd done them before with us there cos at least he'd had the know how lol Although I would never encourage doing the stairs alone Uh Uh! Laughing

Rowans been climbing the stairs since he was 7 months old.

There is nothing wrong with it, Rowans just started (well last month or so more now) to walk down the stairs holding the hand rail.

he will not do it though if we are right by him.

He wont know how to walk down or up the stairs unless he tries them out first.

Tayla started climbing the stairs about 10 months and crawls back down backwards, id rather her learn to do it safety with me there than see it as a game (like she does when shes not allowed to do things!)

Thomas has been climbing up and down stairs since we moved when he was 9 months (I never let him at our old house because the stairs were scarily steep Shocked but he desperately wanted to). First thing I did when we moved here was to teach him to come down safely (with me). He now does the stairs completely independant of me, if I go up or down he follows behind. He likes to go up and down properly now but only does that when Im with him and he holds one of my hands and the banister.

xx

Wil climbed stairs before he could walk. He refuses to come down on his bum and insists on walking down so I tend to go down backwards ahead of him with hands for him to hold as he jumps from step to step.

I have just put the stair gate at the top because he is running round like mad and I have visions of him toppling sideways and going down the stairs. There is no gate at the bottom because he rarely attempts to go up without me.

Izzy has climbed the stairs for as long as she has been able to - the gates are normally closed so I am always there with here

I think if the gate were left open I'd rather her be good at going up then to have never done it before!

Seriously Sam has been climbing the stairs since he could crawl!!

He can get up and down on his own fine now. I couldnt have a baby gate up so i thought better to learn him how to do it rather than have him falling!!
