| Subject: what else can I do? Mon Nov 01, 2010 10:13 pm | |
| ava still has no teeth but for the past few weeks they're really bothering her, she's up in the night all the time sobbing and just wants cuddled in, last night I was up pretty much every hour. I'm giving her teething powders and calpol but nothing seems to be working. I'm worried now incase it's something else that I'm overlooking. Any advice from experienced mummies? |

| How are her nappies - does she have a sore bum at all? Offer liquids - cooled boiled water - if she's dribbling lots maybe. It could also be a tummy upset though, is her temp ok? (sometimes harder to tell if on calpol already). Chilled gel teethers and ice lollies (can do home-made) can help during the day, as can teething gel. You can alternate calpol and baby ibuprofen (neurofen) if needed - but as always, mummy knows best so a trip to the GP if youre worried. x |

| does the calpol work at all? like even for 2 hours? If it doesn't then it might be worth getting her checked over. We thought Tyler was teething for a week as he was really off his food and whiney and it turned out he ahd an ear/throat infection |

| I can really recommend an amber teething necklace, it may not get rid of everything niggle from her but they do have a calming effect on most babies, its worth £15 if it does help her.
Izzy has cut 4 molars and we hardly noticed (other than the nappies and more sleep) but other than that you wouldnt know she was teething...which is crazy cos her front teeth bothered her (although not really bad) |

| Alfie is having trouble with his teeth atm too. Hes had about 6 poo's today - they are a bit loose but nothing worryng. His cheeks are bright red and for the past few nights hes been awful going to bed. Normally once hes had his bottle i put him down awake and he gets himself off to sleep. Now when i put him down hes pulling at his cheeks and screams until i go back in and rock him off. If he wakes during the night hes ok tho.
Gav wont let me get a necklace for him as he doesnt like the idea of him wearing things roud his neck!!
just hope they hurry up and come through x |

| ^ I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've heard (read!) Lisa say you can wrap it round their leg, so it's inside the foot of the sleepsuit? Or may have been another amber-necklace-user? |

| I've got an amber necklace Lisa and it has been good up until now. I take it off when she goes to bed. She's actually ok during the day, it's when she goes to bed at night it really seems to bother her. |

| calpol was no good for sophias teeth she still only has the 2 at the bottom but when she cant settle and I know its her teeth I give her ibuprofen b4 bed and it works a treat for at least 8 hours When its really bad during the day i give her some as well Only need 2.5 ml dose like 3 times in 24 hrs which i think is loads better than giving her 5ml of calpol every 4 hrs (what she was having at 1 point) Hope she gets them through soon hun nothing worse than feeling so helpless for them |

| Yeh you can wrap them round their ankle, as longs as its in contact with the skin it will work
I used to tuck it through a button on her PJs, but I don't anymore, if the unlikely event happened and she got it stuck on something it would break with her weight now, easily as it has a safety catch. |

| C has worn hers day and night for a few months now, its short enough that its pretty safe. But im sure you can also get amber bracelets that would do for an ankle. Otherwise as people have said, calpol and brufen alternating, cold gel teethers or wet the corner of a flannel with water or chamomile tea and freeze it, ice lollies, teething gel - ive been putting the gel on c's teether as her gnawing it gets it right on her gums. Powders can be safely given hourly if need be. Bickiepegs great for chewing too C isnt sleeping well cos of it either and lisa mentioned white noise so im tryng that with c tonight, theres a radio in her room on static on a really low level just to see. Ive read a natural teething remedy you can make is 1-4 drops clove oil to 1 tbsp olive oil or vegetable glycerin. I found it faffy and hard to apply woth the oil but im tempted to give it another go now esp if i can find the glycerin as shes developed a liking for her teether on a stick and i can put it on the teether I did however find this too on a natural parenting forum depends how you feel about some of it: Other homemade remedies include letting your infant chew on a natural licorice stick (the herb, not candy!) You can find natural licorice in health food stores: real licorice feels cool and also numbs the gums when your baby chews on it. Wild fennel, a relative of licorice, grows in disturbed areas in Northern California and other parts of the country: you may be able to harvest it yourself along the bike paths. The feathery, fern-like leaves and hollow stalks can be chewed or sucked for a cooling, licorice-tasting treat. Some parents find that rubbing a little pure vanilla extract on the baby's gums can soothe the crying child: this home remedy may work in three ways. First, merely rubbing baby's gums can ease the pain by creating opposite pressure; second, the alcohol in vanilla extract will create a warm sensation that is temporarily comforting. The third way this remedy may work is in the calming properties of vanilla itself. Vanilla is known as a soothing yet energizing agent that reduces anxiety and promotes feelings of well-being. Besides that, vanilla has long been used to cure stomach distress: a baby whose stomach is mildly upset from crying or swallowing large amounts of drool may find vanilla soothing to the tummy as well as the nerves. |

| cant add to the great advice already given but i do also agree with the "white noise" for soothing them. Have you got a desk top fan or like Mario said an untuned radio?? It helps Cerys to focus on the noise rather on her pain xx |

| hun, have you tried cooling the gums, rich teethed on cold hard cucumber, he enjoyed it and didnt know it was keeping nasty gums cool too.
also try if she has a dummy in the fridge for a bit, i always kept one in the fridge for bed times or the teething rings i always put them in the fridge.
i always found cooling a good way for rich
hope they come through soonxx |
