My SIL split with her boyf yesterday after going out for nearly a year. He was a pretty nice guy and even though I have a few issues with SIL I had let her & him take Caitlin on a few afternoons out to parks/swimming/babysitting over the last 4-5 mths. He would also have saw Caitlin once a week or so at her nana's and played with her. He bought her a lovely bday present and signed the card uncle *****. Anyway I know Caitlin to young to actually miss him but its got me thinking about the future....

When I was PG my SIL had a different boyf, they split (again after being together about 1yr) when I was 5/6 mths PG but up until then he was talked about as uncle *** by my SIL. Iv no problem with my SIL having new boyf all the time, she's only 21 and its normal, but im just wondering if Caitlins going to have a new uncle every year for the next 10 years. I didnt mind her recent boyf being refered to as uncle but am now wondering if I should discourage it next time.

Am I being a tit thinking about this? scratch Do your LO's get new auntys and uncles all the time? I know if my SIL gets a new boyf it would only be a matter of weeks before he was round at her nana's (SIL lives at home) and was introduced when im at work.....

For me it would only be if they had been in a long term relationship/married

Its a bit tricky for me, because Izzy doesn't have any uncles/aunties on my side, so my 3 best friends are her Aunties (their OHs wouldn't ever be uncles though)

On Dans side his brother is only 16 and his sister is gay so wouldn't name her OH aunty too lol

I remember when my aunty split up with her husband. I remember thinking oh hes not my uncle anymore and feeling a bit sad about it.

Its not like she would be seeing these "uncles" again. I think i would probably discourage it unless they are married/long term. xxx

I'd be same as Lisa - only be if they had been in a long term relationship/engaged/married; not sure how you address it if it's being said by someone else though scratch guess it would just be a case of not using it ourselves?!

Actually just wanted to say what a beautiful picture on your avatar snoopy - such a sweetie pie!! Very Happy

Hhmm yeah I think I would agree and only if it were a long term relationship too. Although my bro has been with his girlfriend for about 18 months now and I don't refer to her as aunty to the kids (should I?? ooh I feel a bit mean now scratch )

Aunty/uncle is a minefield in our families. I always refer to my bro and OH's sisters + husbands as aunty and uncles to my kids because thats the way I have been brought up. However OH's family are more relaxed about it all and the kids don't really use aunty/uncle as much just names, i.e. Pauls nieces tend to just call him Paul, not Uncle Paul. I find this weird because even now at 28 years old I would never refer to my aunties/uncles by name only and tbh I think most of them would be mortally offended if I did Shocked

xx

Yeah i def think its gotta be a longer term relationship before you start the whole uncle thing. My sisters bfs are both Uncle scott/mike but they have both been with them coming up 2 years. If they split and met someone else id prob leave it a year at least before i started uncle x with anyone else
