I do tip waiters, hairdressers and eyebrow waxers etc but not people who serve in shops!

Mine is crap and gives us all the post my sisters postie is ace. If she has a parcel and isn't home he takes it to mums house for her. |

| i tip if im in resturants or places like that but def not in shops or take away shops no one tips me at my job and like u say they are paid to do their job my usual postie is ok but there is another guy who sometimes covers his round he covered last christmas and if my mum n dad r out and he has a parcel for them he brings it to my house and vice versa, last year i had ordered a load of picture mugs and photo gifts from snapfish but cos i had discount codes i had to use different addresses and i mentioned this to postie and he looked them all out and brought them to my house instead of my mum n dads and sisters lol |

| My postie is also brilliant! We leave the door on the latch for him in the morning and he lets imself in pouts the parcels on the table and locks the door on the way out, he signs things for us too!
Obviously we've known our postie for years and trust him lol
I think it's different with postmen/hairdressers/waitresses etc because although they get paid they can go aboive and beyond to make your interactions with them a pleasant experience, whereas a shop assisstant just serves youand thats it really
If I know a waitress is just doing her job though and doesn't bother smiling etc I wont tip them just because it's expected |

| im a real meanie when it comes to tips - if a taxi driver hasnt deliberately gone a long way i might tip them (unusual though), my hairdressed costs £35-40 so im not sure she needs a tip! plus...as others said........nobody tips me at work and i feel i f*ffing deserve it i also dont tip our postie cos its often a different guy - my hubbys dad was once complaining that someone hadnt left him a tip (hes a postie) and that was my first inking that i would hate him in future hahaha i think in these times maybe its worth just being grateful for having a job |

| i tip if service is good ,,,,im very particular ( sp ) when tipping waitresses though ,,, i always ask them first if they keep their own tips or if they have to share them as i only want to tip the staff that has served me brilliantly throughout december when i used to waitress ,all our tips were collected together and put for our staff night out |

| I'm a waitress and its always a nice surprise to be tipped, even though I do tell them there's a service charge on the bill already (cheeky isn't it??) they still insist on giving me a fiver.... I always tip when I'm in a restaurant as I know how demanding it can be xx |

| I'm so tight about tips. I never tip anyone and it annoys me that i am expected to. I don't understand why I should tip someone who is doing their job. I was a waitress and I never expected a tip, i got paid by my boss and the customers paid for their food, why did they need to tip me? Sorry if that sounds rude. I just don't understand the whole tipping thing. |

| TIPS - To insure proper service. So unless I've been served by someone..my money stays put. I believe in generosity..but everyone seems to have their hand out for some donation here and there. xxx |

| I tip the hairdresser (on the super rare occasion I can afford it, last haircut was 2.5 years ago! ). A £1 for the junior that washes my hair and a couple of quid to the lady who is cutting my hair. I tip in restaurants, but that tip goes direct to the waitress and if there is a service charge I asked for it to be taken off (legally you are allowed to do this) and say I want to tip individually, why would I want my tip being shared out between people who haven't served me?!? And if I get a cab I always give the driver £1 for a cup of tea or if the fare is say, £8.45 I just give him a tenner and say keep the change get yourself a half when you clock off. In the local corner shop I would not tip, the milkman is crap and keeps forgetting to deliver to me so no he's not getting tipped either and we've had 5 different people that deliver the papers, though last year I gave the wee lad a fiver, he was only about 10 and had been doing it for ages with his big sister watching him. I'm not sure whether to tip our postie or not because if he runs out of time doing the delivery he goes back to the P.O and doesn't deliver to us, we only get post 3 times a week if we are lucky. |

| I always tip in restaurants and usually around the 10% mark. I have been a waitress and the money is rubbish so tips were always greatly appreciated.
I also tip hairdressers and taxi drivers.
The only time I have ever tipped a shop worker was on christmas day because I felt sorry for them having to work that day.
I have to say though I have had some brilliant tips in my time. A lady once gave me a £60 tip for looking after her husbands 70th birthday. I worked in my parents restaurant at the time and worked alone (other than my mum and dad) so I got to keep all tips for myself. I didn't get paid though so it worked out well for me. I used to serve christmas day too and would generally get in the region of £150 tips christmas day.
I despise restaurants with service charges though and if I ate at one would never go back because of it. I don't know how most work but I've worked in two places with service charge and never saw a penny of it.

| Debs - when you get the bill if there is a service charge you can legally ask for it to be taken off so you can tip the waiter/ess personally. I always do, I NEVER pay a service charge as I have been a waitress and we never got to see any of it - I think it was used to pay us our wages. xxx |

| See it's not quite that easy Dilly - by law you HAVE to pay service charge (so long as it was clearly stated on the menu or you were told prior to being seated at your table) unless you have a problem with the service you were given. By refusing on grounds of poor service and then leaving a tip for the waitress you are 'technically' breaking the law I'm one of those fools who 'don't like to make a fuss' so usualy just pay and don't go back. I think it's shocking when you pay a service charge and the service staff don't get it - surely that should be against some 'obtaining money by deception' law? Sorry Pinky - a bit off topic there - back to the OP - no I wouldn't tip a shop worker or takeaway staff unless they were did something exceptionaly nice or were working christmas day. xx |

| an interesting debate all the same, i do tip in restaurants but you feel you have it because its the done thing, if you think of how many people work in other low paid jobs, cleaners and care assistants for example, no-one tips them. |

| Yeah I know what you mean hun, although I always tip hotel cleaners/chamber maids and I usually do half their job for them by stripping the beds, emptying bins etc . Again because it is a job I have done myself in the past and I know how crap it is and some of the disgusting things they have to deal with. I don't tip if I don't think they deserve it though. Some places you go these days you can't get decent service for love nor money. One thing really really annoys me is a waitress that doesnt smile it cost's nothing to smile and be pleasant to people and you can usually win over the arsyest customer by smiling and being friendly and helpful/understanding. They shoot themselves in the foot by being grumpy coz they do not get tipped by me! Oh and don't get me started on service staff who stand around chatting with/texting mates instead of looking after their customers! (can you tell this whole topic is a huge bug bear of mine? ) xx |
