The only think I know about Quakers are that they were one of the first settler groups over in the USA and had very high religious standards for themselves..they were almost fanatical...like Puritans. They are the ones you hear about sharing the first American Thanksgiving ceremony with the First Nations ppl. From what I understand there are small devout follower clans that remain scattered throughout North America. xxx

I went to a quaker secondary school!

It was set up by quakers in the 18th century as a boarding school but when I went there it was just one of the 2 local grammar schools. I think there we only about 6 quakers in a school of 1000 pupils but we still followed the quaker ethos. The boarding department closed when I was about 14.

They believe in silence and reflection. Every morning the whole school would meet for assembly which would end in a 4-5min period of silence to gather our thoughts for the day. On the grounds of the school was a meeting house, never was in it but it was the quaker church so to speak. Dont really know much about the religion as it wasnt forced on us, protestants and catholics attended the school and we were encouraged that we were all equal before god etc.

My school was called friends school. There are a number of them in the UK/ireland all formed by quakers.

I hated it by the way, was a bit snobby but dont think that was to do with it being quaker!

thank snoopy! im going to check that out. i suppose my fear is that they will be a bit cult-y rather than the nice peaceful group they sound like...like jen said, i dont want to go along and get freaked out we will see....

oh and the snobby bit was probably from being an ex boarding school i would imagine!

this might be useful. You'd think id remember more about it . I didnt find the school cult like at all, though like I said nothing was pushed on us. The school motto was - seek those things which are above.
