Went to Carpet Right today to get a carpet for Izzys room, didn't want an expensive one, worked out £125 for the carpet.....not bad

Then they wanted another £125 for bog standard underlay and £85 to fit it

Luckily I had already had a quote from the local carpet fitter fella who said £85 to fit AND supply the underlay!

So I said to the woman that £85 to fit it is stupid and she had a fiddle with her calculator and said can't do for less than £45...so why'd you say £85 then if you can do it for £45?!

Yet Carpet Right have the cheek to advertise 'you wont beat our prices'...hmm well I just did!

these places charge daylight and legal robbery x

BUT my mum decided she would pay..and didnt want the one off ebay

i am the same, i have a friend who is a fitter so i never buy underlay or pay for fitting from th store!

I think they try it on big time, obviously they can do it for £45 with a reasonable profit, it would only take an hour and I bet they only pay their guy £20 for an hour, if that lol - so they make £25 at least just from the fitting

So if the buyer doesn't argue and pays £85 to fit then they make an extra £65!

The guy doing ours charges £45 to fit, which for an hour is about right for self employed stuff like that, and £40 for the underlay is trade price so he makes next to nothing on that

Just goes to show you have to barter for everything before you find out the 'real' price!

Now that you'e explained that they prob only pay fitter £20 I can see what a rip off it is. I can be a mug sometimes and would prob just accept something like that and only think about it later when its too late!

That seems a lot, i had stair and landing carpet laid today and think the fitting and underlay was about £100

Some ranges come with free underlay don't they - guess we know how they cover the cost of offering that though

On a side note, new carpet may be my very most favourite smell xx
