Bailiffs... _
PostSubject: Bailiffs...   Bailiffs... EmptySun Aug 29, 2010 7:41 am

I went to the council a month or two ago to check if we were clear of debt and she said
'Yes you have paid that but there is still £110 owing from another council tax debt from 2008'
She said that they had sent letters about it to old and current address and we hadn't heard anything Mad
They said that it had also gone to a bailiff - who we had no letters from, surely if we hadn't responded to letters they would have come to the door?? Which they had not!

I paid the £110 in cash and have receipts to show this. That was a couple of months ago. In the post this morning I had a letter from the Bailiff saying we have £22.50 on the account and we owe it to them! We have to pay it straight away. We have the money and I am willing to pay it but why now?
There is no reference to where the debt has come from either.

Oh and the icing on the cake is if we pay any other way but cash or cheque they will charge us £3.00 for it!

Because we heard nothing until now do we legally have to pay it??
OH will call them Tuesday but I am really pissed off! Mad Mad
I know that we can't prove that we had no letters but noone has come here or anything xx

When I paid the debt I asked the council if I had to pay the Bailiff still and she said yes!
But she couldn't give me their number which I thought was odd so I forgot all about it,

I don't understand how they can get away with charging you to pay it!

Like some companies charge you when you pay bills in the Post Office!!
Its stupid x

Its really cheeky!, but to be honest I would probably just pay it.

Bailiffs can make £22 turn into hundreds of pounds before you know it.

My OH's dad is one and even he says how terrible it is how they manage to charge so much interest and fees on things.

A woman at work had a £30 fine which got referred to a bailiff and she shoved a couple of letters in a drawer, before she knew it, she owed over £400 that she had to pay back.

We had to set up a special court thingy through work where we paid it out of her wages for her on a monthly basis.

x

I agree with Laura its better to just pay it - for such a small amount it isn't worth the hassle that will come for not paying it.
