You used to have to do general nursing 1st then convert but its direct access these days. Generally you have to apply through NMAS, its a 3 year diploma course regardless of previous degrees unless you already have a nursing qualification and you would be eligible for a bursary of approx 450 a month though it may have gone up since i did my training as ive been qualified near on 8 years now Shocked . I dont know what other benfit entitlements you get though, mari may.

The 1st 18 months of course unless its changed is the common foundation programe where you will study alongside nursing students and learn basic nursing theory, anatomy and physiology etc then the last 18 months is branch specific so you will do your midders stuff. Its is as you say 50% academic and 50% practical so you do blocks of study and blocks of placement. The good thing on placement is some places do long days which are 12-13 hour shifts 3 days a week instead of 8 hours 5 days a week. BUT by 3rd they expect you to do a range of shifts including nights and weekends to prepare you for the actual job itself so thats something to consider. The placement assessment is competency based and your uni blocks are exams, essays etc so its ongoing assessment, expect about 3 assessents a term as i recall.

Hope that helps im being yelled at for bathtime lol

I'm currently in the process of applying for Midwifery. Unless you've got relevent qualifications you'll need to do an access course like i'm doing now. Midwifery is in such high demand at the minute and with few places it is really hard to get into it. Most universities are asking for a high percentage of distinctions in your access grades and good experience.

I'm just waiting to hear back from two universities to see if i've got an interview.

Alot of universities are apparently cutting places for next year so it will be even harder to get in after this year, and a woman in September said they may be cutting down on bursaries etc (again i'm not sure if this has happened yet or not?)

All i can say is really think about it before you apply. The access course costs money with no guarantee of you even getting a place at university and it is alot of work too.

It's three years for the actual university degree, but if you have to do the access course then that's another year on top Smile

Like lisa i'm doing the access course. I have gone part time recently as struggled to keep ontop of everything, i'm studying
English, maths, IT, Maths for scientists and Biology in the first year and thne Chemistry and psychology next year
It would appear that access courses across the country vary hugely, some give choices and others don't you just have to go with what they say.
In comparieson to other areas i am studying quite alot.

The degree in management will be irrelivant i would think unless you have gcse's in science, maths and english that were completed within the last 5 years.
I have a degree in Business and accounting and have had to start from scratch as i have no social science qualifications.

Like Lisa said you do have to pay for the access course, but (this may just be for my college) it is deoendant on your income, not your oh's!
Mine was free, and a lady i get on with had a 50% reduction because her income was low (even tho her husband has a very well paid job)

Uni's are very competitive and standards are very high as there is so much demand and very limited places.
There are due to be cuts in places but the bursery system although it is being looked at the uni i have spoke to have said that the bursery system will be there for the next 3-5 years in their opinion. There would be consultations occur before anything could be taken away.

I'd definatly reccoment the access route, i'm loving college! and as i'm part time i'm getting the best of being mummy as well.

Im doing the 1 year kell, it depends on how well you do on the exams to get you in. They are both full time courses i believe. As i got 93% maths and 86% english i only need to do 1 year. X roll on septrmber... i cant wait!! X
