Anger management needed... _
PostSubject: Anger management needed...   Anger management needed... EmptyTue Jan 25, 2011 1:39 am

I have a little boy who slaps people, well mainly me actually Sad when he gets told no or something is taken off him that he shouldn't have. I don't, and never have, tap his hand as punishment so I don't know where he has picked it up. I've even asked the nursery if they have witnessed it but they said no but are keeping an eye out for it. Almost all of the time he is a loving little boy full of cuddles and kisses but he does lash out when things don't go his way and I don't know how to tackle it Sad

Any advice would be appreciated xxxxxxxxx

See thats what my parents did when I was little Claire, and sometimes I'm tempted to give him a tap back but I think he would just think it was a game and hit me back Rolling Eyes

Suzie I might try something like that, but its just getting him to stay there and understand what hes done x

to start off with as horrible as it sounds i used to have to keep her there at arms length and keep her pushed near the wall (obviously not actually pushing her just holding her there) x

I did try biteing gracie back but i soon stopped when she kept laughing and asking for more when i wouldnt she started biting herself. so the wall it was

now the threat of the wall stops her in her tracks x

Im trying the ignore route at the min. Eg if she hits/throws etc I pick her up and move her from the me/child/object and place her a few feet away from it with her back turned and then move away from her. I cant say its working 100% but it is teaching her that if she does it she gets moved away.

I admit to bum/hand tapping on occassions. I dont think it works any better than moving her away so Iv stopped doing it. The only time I still do pat her bum is when she goes near the oven (even if its off), that has worked though as she hasnt been near it in months. I think the terror in my voice when she went to touch it scared her a bit. I cant scream & tap her bum though for everything she does or Id be doing it all day and the message would get lost about serious things like the oven..... I dont even know if that makes sense! I think im contradicting myself a bit lol.

I have similar...Izzy will sometimes grab and pull my hair or scratch my face...in anger or frustration...and I have to, however much it hurts, ignore it and just calmly ask her to stop/let go.

Most of the time she isn't meaning to be nasty - its just her reaction - so I dont think me telling her off for it would do any good, and chances are she lets go and I can calm her down - but if I shouted at her she'd get madder!

Its really hard to remain calm when they are hitting/grabbing/hurting you in someway - but which ever route you choose, like using the wall, ignoring or whatever - dont raise your voice or seem angry at all....they'll pick up on it and either play up worse or get upset.

If Wil does anything physical to a person or animal I grab his wrist and pull him away quite roughly and say no in a really sharp way. Then I get his attention and warn him that if he does it again he will be punished. If we get to step 3 he gets whatever he is playing with removed and he is unceremoniously dumped in the middle of the floor and ignored.

I insist he says sorry before any other interaction takes place

C doesnt hit but she does throw things and she gets naughty step for that. She has kicked a few times though not often and ditto its been naughty step offence. Ive found its almost impossible to keep her in naughty corner without physically blocking her exit and one day spent 40 mins putting her back every 20 secs which was terrible so now i put her on the step in the hall and shut the stair gate so she cant get back in and she stays there for 2 mins. After i explain why she was put there and expect either an apology (rare, she will apologise to her daddy if i tell her to for some reason but not often to me, think we are too similar) or a cuddle (more often i get this) then we go and play nicely.

For some reason she accepts the naughty step and doesnt go upstairs just stands at the gate crying. If im out and about i find a step and sit in front of her with no eye contact til her times up so she cant move. The looks i got in pc world last week for naughty stepping her by the cctv computer! It has reduced the throwing to fairly minimal levels thugh and shes learned to put things down nicely now like her juice or food so dont have to use it often.

They say you are meant to give a warning but the throwing like the hitting is usually a one shot deal so its a bit tricky. I tend to give a warning for the 1st time in a day it happens and if she does it again during the day then its the step. Her memories good enough to cope with events within the same day now.

Its only my opinion but i wont go down the tap on the hand route if i can help it with C though ive been reeeealllllyyyy sorely tempted at times esp when she kicked me in the belly recently but i took a step or two away from her so she couldnt reach me and took a deep breath and i have to say im glad i did as i dont think doing it back to her teaches her its wrong and just would have made it worse. Only my opinion though as its a tricky one
