My door knocked there & it was male neighbor from next door (couple in early 60's). He asked me did I run a machine/do washing at 330am. He'd heard it again last night and in fact hears it most nights, its like a whirring noise that wakes him up and goes for 30min and he cant get back to sleep. We truthfully said no, I do washing late at night but generally 3-4 loads in a row and is finished by 1230/1am at latest and only 1-2 nights a week. The last time I did washing was last fri, but that was at about 9am. I told him id stop doing washing so late but he said that musnt be it becasue its def later than that. He joked it must be aliens then and not to tell his wife he had asked me because they didnt want to cause upset. (They lovely couple & gave Caitlin £20 at xmas).

When he'd gone I racked my brains and have realised it is me he hears . Caitlin frequently wakes at 3/330am and I get up to retrieve a dummy. We live in bungalow and if I notice btl empty I might bung it in dishwasher along with any other crap thats been left on counters and stick dishwasher on. Im used to the noise and I think the whirring actually sends me and Caitlin back to sleep.
Im so embarrased that iv been keeping him awake for weeks/months! Stuart says not to admit its us and just stop doing it but I feel I need to tell him and apologise. I keep peeking out window to see if I can see him walking dog.

I honestly feel a bit sick/stupidly worried that Iv annoyed them. I have slight insomnia and would also turn eastenders on/make a sandwhich at 4am sometimes and im now freaking out at what else they can hear and are ignoring to be polite. They must think im a right weirdo/liar now

hun, you have 3 options

1) own up, explaining that you realised after he left and that you will not be doing it again and that you apologise for being a terrible (lol) neighbour

2) or ignore it and continue what you doing

3) or just stop the dishwashing late at night, to be honest we always put ours on before we go to bed,

least he wasnt complaining about hearing you moaning during the night and wondering if you was ok, pmsl happend when i lived in the flat, although i was the neighbour being kept awake, thoguht she was hurt (they used to fight badly) but no was making up .... i didnt say anythnig because it was clear after a little while what it was lol

Don't feel bad, just say you've had a think about what it could be and you think it might be the dishwasher!

i would admit it was me - but i honestly got halfway through reading that story and thought oh god, it was her vibrator! haha but a dishwasher?! i wouldn't be mortified about that, it could be worse

lol when I was reading your post and you said it was me I thought like mari it was a vibrator lol. I think you should say that you had a think about it and realised it could be your dishwasher am sure they will understand. Remind me not to move to your street lol

Anyway it was man next door again, with a bag of jellybabies for Caitlin (me really ). He apologised for being a victor meldrew last night & said it was to do with age and would happen to us in time. He said he was annoyed at himself for saying anything and it wasnt up to him to tell me how to live my life. I apologised and said it was the dishwasher and it wouldnt happen again. He went on about the houses having crap walls and he would sell if he could, its not just us but previous neighbours he can hear people walking in heals and if tvs off he can follow a conversation (No more getting jiggy in living room late at night) . The more I think about it me doing just dance on the wii at 2am prob hasnt been a hit with him either .

Well at least the air is cleared now and he clearly feels as annoyed/upset as I did today. He joked again that if his wife finds out he is dead meat

awwwww that's lovely, i'm so pleased that you got it all sorted out that was lovely of him coming round - saved you having to do it haha yaaaaaaaaay! (and yeah, the just dance was probably not massively popular )

Ahhhh this made me smile. It's nice you can sort out a problem without falling out and now you have been able to confess i'm sure you feel better!!
