someone i know has just added her son on facebook he is 6

I think once they start secondary its ok, so 11/12. Id open the account for them though & check that their privacy settings were at the tightest.

In saying that at 6, if theyre only on the internet supervised, to look at pics of family, send receive bday messages and play a few games like farmville I suppose its not that bad. I wouldnt let them off to their room on their own with a laptop though and have free reign to add who they wanted etc. Surely at 6 anyway their reading and typing skills arent up to using it properly so its a bit silly!

I think anytime before secondary school is a no no for me. I would like to say 16 like Mr Pixel but realistically I think 13 but no doubt once they get to seniors and all their friends have it you don't really have much choice. If you say no they will set it up anyway at a friends house etc and then you will have no idea about privacy etc.

My OHs nephew has just set up an account and he is 8 - this doesn't suprise me as his parents let him sit up playing 18 rated xbox games until 10-11 on a school night but it has really annoyed me. I can't decline his request as he's only a kid and it would look like I was being nasty but by accepting I have now found myself in a position where anything I post, write, join, like or even comment on other friends posts can be viewed by him and I therefor feel I have to censor myself. This has really peed me off tbh (not that I make a habit of swearing and joining nasty groups etc but the fact that I even have to 'think' about it) as I use my fb quite a lot and feel I can't be myself as much now. To me it's like going down the pub for a few drinks with your mate and someone turning up with their kid so you have to censor your conversation - very annoying!

I am going to get lynched now as both my big boys have facebook!! They are 10 & 7 years!! But neither go on unsupervised and they only use it to play petville etc and keep up with their mates from when we lived in Scunny!

Far too young!

I think 6 is far too young, MJ is 5 and she goes on my fb to play farm games, pet caring games, My Shops & an egg cracking game. When she is older I may consider letting her have her own one but only when I feel she has the maturity to understand fully the dangers of the net. xxxx

garry has a FB. simply cause i needed more neighbours for my games no one but me can access it and my sisters, mum, dad and granparents are friends.

I thought fb had a minimum age that is checked when you enter your date of birth when registering. If fb has a minimum then it should be respected.

Debs - you can put your nephew on a limited profile and block him from seeing certain things on your profile. That's what I do with my 13 year old nephew (and my MIL)

I know what you mean about censoring yourself debs! My cousin is on mine and she's 13 but I still feel I have to not swear/tell rude jokes/say anything 'too adult'.

I suppose i cant blame it just on age though, my other cousin is 29 and a serious christian so out of respect to her i try not to swear etc either. My uncle is friends with us all and I cringe when I see him using C*nt on his FB as he clearly doesnt see the need to change his statuses for us - I suppose his attitude is if we dont like it block/delete/hide him!

Family on facebook is the worst! My uncles gf constantly gesback to my grandparents with 'gossip' on what were up to, everyone who's on my facebook will know I honestly don't do much so what the point is I'll never know

Anyway that was a seperate rant lol I don't think age really matters as long as their being supervised, for example I like playing the games so my child wanted to I'd let them have their own facebook so they could play and not mess up mine lol

It does have a minimum age but as the boys are only allowed on the Internet with adult supervision I feel it is my choice to ignore this! In the same respect the kids aren't allowed to play xbox games unless myself or my partner have played them, the same goes for films! I do get slated by kids for being strict in this regard when other parents aren't!

rich has one but i set it up, mainly so i could have a neighbour for my games, but he goes on once in a while to clean/feed his pet, but he doesnt understand fb, only friends he has is me and russ and the cats (more neighbours needed lol)
but as he gets older he might want to use the status box and things, and tihs will be monitored.

but at the moment he does his pet and thats it, i might get him into frontierville, thats my fav lol

My little cousons are all on there the youngest is 6 i cudnt believe it when he added me but appantley my auntie set it so he cant use the wall or anything just the games but im sure if seen him post x
