My daughter had been diagnosed with lactose intolerance since she was a week old, I too have this allergy but do not manage it as I should. I know it is a long way off but does anyone know of a good weaning book that leaves out all lactose based products

I didnt use a specific weaning book... I just swapped things in recipes.

Eg if a recipe needed milk, I used her formula (nutramigen).
For butter, I used Pure a dairy free spread available in most supermarkets
For yoghurts I used alpro soya ones.

I started off with fruit/veg purees mixed with formula. Maybe added some Pure butter to mash potato & blend in chicken, corned beef etc... Baby rice/porridge etc just add nutramigen. Toast, bread sticks etc fine for finger foods, ella's kitchen pouches most are dairy free, organix crisps again check label but most are fine, ellas's kitchen ginger & apple baby cookies are great too for chewing/teething.

As she got older I found most breaded fish fingers were lactose free (batters not!). Custard you can make yourself using birds custard powder with the formula, even add som cocoa powder to make it chocolatey for a treat Very Happy

Tesco have a good 'free from' aisle. We got choc buttons for her there, alpro soya desserts, breads/rolls etc (Though normal pan loaf is fine anyway).

Most foods are fine. Caitlin is growing out of her allergy atm and im slowly introducing dairy - she can now eat cheese, youghurts, pastry, pancakes, butter etc. I found that a dairy free diet is quite easy if you stick to simple foods - and very healthy. Eg meats, fish, veg, fruits, baked beans, pasta, tomato based sauces, spaghetti hoops etc. Im not a great cook so didnt really look at recipe books much. Caitlins food was all very simple lol! Or from a jar Embarassed (at least 60% of 1st stage jars are dairy free - you just have to check label every time you buy!)

Oh thank you both that is extremely helpful. I had planned to just make all her food myself well mostly, so I was just hoping there were suitable alternatives

Yes things are very different now to when I was young it was just a case of cutting it completely out of my diet.

Not sure if all supermarkets do it - but Sainsurys have a 'free from' section, which I think looks quite useful...not sure if it is as not needed it!

I can only echo what Snoops has said as Drew is the same. I make up a bottle of Nutramigen then use how ever much is needed in the recipe for example scrambled eggs I do him 2 eggs then a generous splash of his special milk (but don't eat the eggs yourself Nutramigen is the most vile tasting product ever to grace this earth!!!)

Both Asda and Sainsbury's have a good free from range. Drew enjoys the dairy free white buttons (on the odd occasions my children are allowed treats) so he thinks he has the same as his big sister and doesn't feel left out (and they are also rather scrummy!)

if you have any trouble buying things (in the future etc...) http://www.wheatanddairyfree.com/ is quite a good site although P&P is £6 if you spend less that £60

I use Lactofree milk http://www.lactofree.co.uk/ xxx
