Ive just googled it and found that, obv child benefit is still frozen baby element of Child tax credits has been stopped with pretty much immediate effect (extra money for havin a baby under 1) the child tax threshold has been raised a bit (dont understand this one) Personal tax allowance raised - so where you used to get approx the first £6470 of your wage tax free, its now gone upto about £8100 form 2012 i think....... erm not sure about much else xx

Doesn'y it normally work, that those having babies as of 6th April cant claim under 1 yr allowance, I dont think they take if your already getting just new applicants...

ive just read that all these changes were announced in the oct 2010 budget, but are coming into effect this April............it just says 'no baby element to be paid from April 2011' so I take it that it is everyone, I may be wrong and its just new applications, but it certainley doesnt read that way. They are increasing the threshold a touch which should compensate for a few quid of it, but no i think im worse off. Also no child tax benefit at all for over £40 or £45k households (cant remember the figure!)

50p on cigs I seriously need to quit! I can remember when they were £1.36 for 10. Theyve gone up 2.5x the price in the last 10 years. I agree with it though. Its not a necessity, and is a bad habit. I prob pay more tax as a smoker than I do if I worked for the minimum wage and didnt smoke. If they made cigs £20 a packet tomorrow id say there would be 75% less smoker over night - or else a 500% increase in crime as we'd all behave like crackheads after a fix 1p off petrol, pah! Guarantee it goes up anyway for other reasons in the next month - it always does! Baby element doesnt affect me. Emma I hope your ok and your OH finds something else, its so hard atm. Im still applying for jobs with no luck and stu only does 20 hrs a week. It seems the govt is keen on getting everyone working and less reliant on handouts which is all well and good but there are damn all jobs out there atm & the competion is enormous! x

emma i am sorry i hope you are ok and you get something sorted soon xx the whole benifits thing is funny i did the thing on the direct gov website and basicly if i didnt work and sat at home on my ass we would be £45 a week better off i thought i was supposed to better off working lol xx

I dont get that at all meandmyboys! How is that right?! I dont work, am on IS, CTC, CB and HB and when I finished mat leave and lost my WTC and stat maternity pay, even though my HB increased im def worse off by about £70 a week. The only reason I did it was I was deterimined to focus on getting social work experience to put my degree to use. Iv always found it weird when people are worse off working. The govt really need to sort that out. I think somethimes people think its because benefits are too generous - I think the prob is employers dont pay enough and rents are so expensive x

I am pleased to announce that following today's budget OH and I will be £96 a year better off So that's a whole £8 a month. I shall put it to a good cause...paying for diesel. I can see the 1p litre reduction in fuel duty being swallowed very quickly in the daily increase at the pump. The CB goes in 2013 for those in the 40% tax bracket (over about £42k a year).

Gill I've just read that the CB goes in April 2012? Do you know if they have changed it or is it still worked stupidly? It was said that it was if one earner was in the higher tax band or is it now classed as the household income?

You are probably right I asked OH and took his word for it. It is if one earner is in the higher tax band so effectively you could have a household where 2 people earn almost £40k and still get it but if one earns £45 and the other nothing you don't get it. We lose it either way. |

That 45k earning thing is ridiculous... Its stupid that a house can have 75k coming in and still get it and another house with £30k less doesnt. Politicians are thick as feck imo!
