PostSubject: Serious question   Serious question EmptyTue Mar 29, 2011 9:08 am

I can't afford to keep my dog anymore. He's 9 years old, has got dicky back knees and I know that he is going to cost a hell of a lot of money that we just don't have sooner or later plus I can't give him the attention he needs anymore.
I would like him to go to a nice new home but he is an Irish Staffie which means that all the riff raff would come out of the woodwork if I was to advertise him. Is there anyway that I can make sure he goes to a nice home where the people will love him and give him the attention he needs? I don't want any money for him, I just want him to be taken care of until the end of his life.

I think you'd just have to vet the people that were interested in him really carefully, even visit their home, simple as that

Thing is it is probably going to be hard to find a home as people will realise he is not in the best of health and maybe not be so keen

Am I right in thinking that the Dogs Trust check people before they let them have a dog?
He really needs to go but he deserves a decent home, not just chavs that will fight him or anything like that.

I know my mums friend went to an RSPCA shelter and they wouldn't let her have the dog she wanted as her garden wasn't secure enough for a large dog - I dont know for sure if all rehoming centres do home visits though - you'd be better off to ring up and make sure they do.

I really don't know what to do??? My heart says noooooooooo don't get rid of him but my head is saying at some point he is going to cost you money that you simply don't have and he will get better attention somewhere else.

And now to making matters so much $%&^*(& worse my sister has just started on me cos I put get rid of and apparently that's harsh. And cos I told her to butt out, I am now childish aswell!!!! Yeah cos this decision is really $%&^*(& easy for me!!! I'm gonna kill her when I see her!!!!

umm when we were rehoming the cats last year the place (cats protection league i think - but the example stands Laughing) let us keep the cats until they found somewhere suitable - that way they weren't going into a shelter and using up resources but we also knew the wøman who got them was responsible, maybe thats an option?

I know im gonna get shot down for this but.......you know him so well, and if its a decision youre sitting on the fence about, then I think he would be happier with you!!

It sounds like a more 'financial' issue, so could you speak to your vet and arrange a payment plan if necessary?? We know our vet that well with all our pets over the years that if a 'big bill' came in, then they would let us pay it off etc.

I think the breed he is, is always gonna give rehoming issues, and I personally couldnt live with that...just wondering where he would end up?? Your his be all and end all, and needs familiarity in his later years.

Im sorry that my advice prob isnt what you want to hear xxxx

I would really reccomend dogs trust. We got our dog from there and had to have an interview and home check before we could have him. They also took in mil& fil's dog after they decided they didn't want her anymore, she was 11 and not in fantastic health, but found a home within a week Very Happy

I completely understand what you are saying hun but financially we are in deep poo at the mo so even if we were able to pay the fees off bit by bit it would still cripple us Sad I am so upset at the thought of giving him up (made even worse thanks to my brainless sister who all of a sudden has grown up so she can use big words to insult me). I really don't know what to do and I'm in tears just trying to figure it out Sad

Awwwww hun, Im sorry....you need to contact the dogs trust for some help.

They would advise with re-homing or with vets fees through pdsa etc

I hope you find the right solution.

The other option that I have used in the past is to contact the 'rescue' specific to the breed.....they will leave them with you until a perfect home is found, and that way you can be assured that only people checked by them and who understand the breed would be considered.

Google staff rescue, and see if that gives you any local options xxx
