have just picked up on something clare and russ said about her son being near water


i live next to the beach, i think carla ( aedans mummy ) has been down this beach maybe she will understand where i am coming from

anyways ,,, there is also the harbour and great big wall that kids walk along , it scares the crap outta me ! , you see kids daily walking along this wall and the waves , well they are not predictable and come flying up over
several lives have been lost , 1 guy came out the pub opposite and thought he was smart ,, 21 years old ,,
i dont allow my children to go down the seafront at all on their own but my oldest is near 12 and cannot understand why he cant go with his friends !
i have even considered moving away from the area purely to prevent that maybe 1 day in several years time my child becomes that drunk person thinking its fun to walk the wall and be taken by a wave
i know i cannot protect them from everything but this part of the beach really does petrify me for my children , he is perfectly aware of the dangers but maybe peer pressure will one day make him do it ?
There is a old quarry / dog walkers part at the back of me and there is a pond there , i have also banned them from going there but some of their friends go tadpole fishing and i worry that they will defy my ruling and go and fall in !

hun i can see why your worried about it,
rich is going with supervisors but i hate the thought i'm not there, he also goes sailing every year with school and that day i have to have off work and keep by the phone, hes been doing it 6 yrs and apparently very good at it.

but its the thought that something could happen and i not there, i dont let it stop him doing things, and he doesnt know how i feel because he would not go.

but i'm like you if we lived near a beach he wouldnt be out, but they do have to learn, if rich didnt have his issues, then i'd probably let him out if i completely trusted his mates etc, but would take a lot for me to do that.

perhaps its down to letting them learn a bit for themselves, all you can do is prepare them for the dangers, like road safety,stranger danger but i'd be torn just like you

its really scary, we have a lake near by and everybody in the town at some point has spent the summer in the lake, its where all the kids hang out.... sadly though many children/adults have also died here, i think theres something like that everywhere you go xx
i have on many occasions got drunk, camped and gone swimming in the lake as a wee nipper but now im a parent my kids doing that would terrify me!

I can understand why your worried about it hun but people die crossing the road and unfortuantely we can't keep our kids wrapped in cotton wool forever you just need to teach them right from wrong.

Kids over here borrow their older siblings motorbikes and go riding around the villages on them with no helmets on. Last year 3 kids died because they got hit by a taxi overtaking a car on a blind corner so I can see where your coming from with the peer pressure etc but well at the end of the day if they want to do something they will do it whether you let them or not (probably!) but at least if you let them you can teach them how to be safe x
