| aww that cake looks amazing!!! i am sh*t at baking really and tbh cannot be doing with using my free minutes doing it just for it to be rubbish was thinking about getting a heap of these http://www.marksandspencer.com/Marks-and-Spencer-Chocolate-Cupcakes/dp/B003J3MXMS?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_8&nodeId=72541031&sr=1-8&qid=1304717867&pf_rd_r=0VTMZTJV0EDT1K7CZMKE&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=72541031&pf_rd_p=215570647&pf_rd_s=related-items-3 in strawberry and chocolate and arranging it into a '1' but hubby reckons we should do a proper cake (plus pastries but i don't like pastries and hey....elijah couldn't care less ) |

| Nooo don't get those Mari as I've had them and they're horribly dry. Seriously you could easily make far far nicer ones. They take about 30 mins to make and bake then you let them cool. Once they've cooled for a couple of hours you can ice them with Betty Crocker chocolate fudge icing in about 20 mins max. Let me know if you'd like a recipe. Cuppies are good for birthday's as you don't have to faff cutting them and you can just give a napkin with them rather than having to have another plate xxx |

| how about looking in asda or sainsbury which is cheaper, we had cakes from asda other day and they were nice, they do a good range now. i'm hopeless at baking too, i made a thomas cake for rich's 1st birthday and i still get stick now every year for that cake, i couldnt get the icing blue , but it tasted ok, just looked terrible. but i'd look in sainsburys sometimes they do tiny cupcakes, which i think are about right size for little ones and then a birthday cake for the adults, also you got to think you going to want a photo of him blowing out the candle on his first birthday. |

| hmmmm yeah i suppose a pic of him blowing a candle out on a mini cupcake is just going to look mean! lisa if you could let me have a recipe that would be great, i can put it in my little book of recipes i have a collection and tbh im not that bad at baking, it's just that i can never seem to just do what im told so the outcome is unpredictable im personally not that bothered about eating cake but we are out the day before and j is working the whole week before....and i need the buffet to look ok maybe as you say, a cake (i had a look on asda online and they have a few) for candles....i also thought about those cutting bars/a plain cake and we could ice it ourselves then have other small things for people to nibble |

| I did both! I got a fairy princess cake from Tesco, it was very pretty and quite cheap and tasted nice. I also got cupcakes from Costo, they looked fantastic but didnt really taste very nice! Did you get your plates and napkins etc sorted? I got mine from party pieces I think its www.partypieces.co.uk I got a whole 1st birthday pack which included balloons, plates, cups, napkins, banners, tableclothes etc and was about £24. xx |

| Vanilla cupcake recipe from the Primrose Bakery and they're yummy;
Makes 12 muffin case sized cupcakes;
110g unsalted butter (or stork) 225g Caster sugar (golden is preferable) 2 large eggs 150g Self-raising flour - sifted 125g Plain flour - sifted 120ml Semi-skimmed milk 1 tsp vanilla extract
Pre-heat oven to 160oC (fan), 180oC.
Cream butter and sugar Add the eggs one at a time and beat well In a seperate bowl combine the flours Put the milk in a jug and add the vanilla extract Add 1/3 of the flours to the creamed mix and beat well. Pour in 1/3 of the milk mix and beat again. Reapeat until all the flours and milk have been added. Carefully spone the mix into your cases 2/3 full. Bake for about 25 mins until slightly raised and golden brown. |
