I signed up but have never really used it.

I think the idea is that you follow people (a bit like having friends on fb)

http://twitter.com/ it's sort of like msn, but instead of having a one on one conversation people just post updates (like kind of having your own board) that people can respond to...if you really want everyone to know every little thought you have then you can post it up there - apparently some people do

some of the celeb ones are vaguely entertaining but I haven't really got into it yet, maybe you can do more exciting things with it that I don't get haha
