Food shopping, what is cheaper? What do you prefer?

We don't spend a lot on food, aim for £50/£60 every 4wks then few little bits every week like milk/bread. It's always good to save even a little bit though so I've been thinking about online shopping. It would be more convenient, saving petrol &time but I hate the thought of things being substitued if they don't have what I want and I've heard stories about being getting stuff that goes off the next day.

After looking at my shitty budgeting skills on the other thread I think I need to get a grip - you sound sorted as it is!

I should prob try online as I am a total impulse buyer, dont meal plan or do lists. We just buy the same things every week and stock up on offers we spot. The only thing putting me off online is Stuart works in Tesco so we get 10% off and i dont think we could get that online. Plus Tesco is only a 3 min drive round the corner so petrol doesnt even cost too much. Really I should get off my fat bum and walk down every day and just buy what we need but I dont.

Stuart used to work in the home shopping part and do the 'picks'. He says they always look for the best dates and its the handet that suggests replacement products - though common sense has made him over ride the machine before.

We are thinking of going back to online shopping.

We seem to spend so much more when we go in and never seem to actually come home with proper meals.

online is 100% definitely cheaper (even including the delivery cost which is 3.50-6£ depending on the time)for us.

especially if you write a meal planner, then other stuff you need, you can really shop around and get the best deals/not be tempted by other stuff. you can also stop halfway through and come back to it Laughing we always save more and stay much more within budget online cos you can add as you go more easily too.

we been thinking about shopping online, but had so many diasters before with dates of meat and fruit being off its putting us off. but it would be easier with lucas,

i think it would save money because you wouldnt impulse buy, but today in saisnburys i saved £10 on laundry stuff because it was on offer, so that to me was worth it.

They were talking about this on this morning today and mentioned this website
http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/
I haven't tried it yet but it shows you where your shopping would be cheapest and shows you where you can swap items to save yourself some money and you can choose from all the best deals xx

online for me too, I hate taking Chloe shopping, she's a little moo after 10 minutes and I spend less. I get mine with Tesco and I'm always really happy with the quality, plus you can specify if there is anything you don't want to subsitute when you shop and the driver always checks if I'm happy with any subsitutions, if I'm not he takes it back, so no complaints here x

Thats what I was thinking Mari, as atm we go into Milton Keynes for food shopping which is about 15/20mins away, as the tescos here is shite. So it's just time/petrol and tbh i think the effort of pushing two round the supermarket is going to be too much when baby boy gets here.

Ooh thanks for the link mrsmb I'll deff check that out

^^thats why i'm a little reluctant as i've heard loads of stories like that. I'll try it once and see how it goes. If it's a disaster we'll just go back to shopping in store.

PostSubject: Re: Supermarket vs Online   Supermarket vs Online EmptyThu Jul 07, 2011 3:00 am

I've had to start doing an online shop as we don't have a car and our nearest supermarket is about 40 mins walk away Shocked (I lie, actually, Waitrose is only about 15 mins away but I don't have a spare kidney to sell Rolling Eyes ) and it's actually working out really well for us. We've gone from doing a weekly shop to a fortnightly shop as we can get more and not worry about trying to carry it home, and that's saving us money. I haven't (yet!) had any problems with substitutions or close expiry dates, and you can put notes on your order for certain items if you want, they've been really good at following those so far. They've also emailed me with money off/free delivery e-coupons so I've been pretty pleased.

Having said all that,, they'll probably completely cock up my next order won't they. Laughing

Can't imagine living so far from supermarket and not having a car!

So who do you do your online shopping with? Asda or Tesco?
