Some good news and a slight concern _
PostSubject: Some good news and a slight concern   Some good news and a slight concern EmptyTue Sep 06, 2011 6:14 am

Took Awen to weighing in clinic this morning, they have been a little concerned as she dropped in her book after getting refluxy and was slow to gain so have been going anything from 1-2 weekly for weighing.

Last time she gained 14oz in 3 weeks as i couldnt make the fortnightly one so they said to leave it another 3. Today shes gained 17.5oz in 3 weeks is weighing 13-12.5 and is back on the line she was born on cheers

Ive told em im doing BLW and shes on bottles now but is having 4 bottles a day of 6-8oz as well as 3 meals, Breakfast is porrige off a spoon but she self feeds aside from that. I also said shes like a different baby now over last few weeks shes happy and content she talks all the time and smiles and laughs at everything, shes the cheekiest little sod ive ever seen. Ive been able to stop all meds for reflux and the all day screamin and clinging seems to have died RIGHT down, she tends to just scream when shes hungry now.

HV says the BLW and real food is obviously suiting her and is realy pleased, she also says I seem much happier in myself which I am as have been struggling a lot for a few months now but feel far less worried and stressed. I only have to go back monthly now or as needed.

Thats the brill news. As for the concern was hoping for some advice. she had pasta for dinner tonight and for first time put some pesto on it. She rubbed her face a fair bit and got some lumps of pesto on her face. After dinner i washed it off and where the pesto had been were some red blotches, only a couple but I checked the pesto and its got pine nuts in it. Got a small blob and rubbed it on her arm and after a min rubbed it off again and it looked red but its hard to tell as she marks so easily the rubbing has a similar effect on her skin. Im wondering if i should go speak to my gp and was hoping someone might have some experience

So glad Awen is doing well and it's having Ab effect on you too

As for reaction to pesto, Imogen had a similar reaction to mayonnaise. When I spoke to a nurse about it she said leave it a month then at a time when your calm and have time (incase theres reaction) try giving her mayo again and see how she reacts. So we've been doing that every couple of months since and recently shes been absolutely fine so seems like she's outgrown it. Not sure if the advice would be the same though ad nut allergies can be worse

thats great news about her weight and reflux, as for the pesto, Chloe gets the same reaction with ketchup, if she gets it on her face, its got better as she's got older as it was really bad when she was younger. Obviously as its nuts you need to be careful, I guess you could try maybe a little peanut butter and see, or the gp might run some allergy tests for you x

I agree it could be an allergy and she prob will grow out of it. Just be careful with it possibly being nuts. I would strongly advise against giving a bit of peanut butter as peanuts can cause very severe anaphylactic reactions if she is allergic. Id be tempted to avoid all nuts until she at least 2 or 3 then try again.

Allergys tend to be worse the 2nd or 3rd time you are exposed to the allergen. So this time it may cause a skin reaction or bad tum but next time could be worse. Maybe im over cautious as iv a nut allergy myself and Caitlin had the milk allergy, I just wouldnt rush with challenging it and its not like pesto/nuts are a necessary part of her diet. x

Oh and btw imo allergy testing is a bit rubbish. I had skin testing done at hospital when I was 10 and came out as more allergic too wheat than to nuts. I ate weetabix every bloody day as a child with no ill affects but when aged 4 chewed a peanut and had a severe reaction. Skin testing is hit and miss and few hospitals offer children medical supervision when challenging an allergy, usually they just suggest avoiding the food for a few years.

The night Caitlin ended up in an ambulance due to aptamil she had bloods taken to prove milk allergy and they came back negative. The consultant said he wasnt happy with the testing but as they miss so many kids and in his mind it was a milk allergy. I agree as once I switched to dif formula every other symptom disappeared.
