when did your toddler go into a bed/when did you change your cotbed? elijah still has his sides on and i daresay he would fall out (though doesn't seem to move that much once he's actually asleep), but maybe it's time cos he hates being in his cotbed...

We took one side off Seb's cotbed on friday (just over 2 1/2) as he had started regularly climbing out (and in) and was in danger of injuring himself doing so. We've just taken one side off to minimise the chance of him falling out. The first night was fine, the 2nd night he fell out twice and cried so we had to get up to put him back in. We don't want to get a bedguard as he has to learn at some point, which may as well be now whilst he has a very low cotbed.

We have no intention of replacing the cotbed with a "proper" bed until we need too, probably age 4ish - may as well do nighttime nappy training with small bedding and a mattress we are going to throw out.

Aimee was about 19 months and we just bit the bullet and put her in a single bed. Its a huge bed too so she had a bit of a way to fall if she fell out. We purchased a spare single mattress that goes under her bed, so we used to pull it out and if she fell out of bed, she would land on it and on the subject of toddler beds 270211.

Once we switch the flat into a two bed (which will probably be sometime after christmas) we're going to think about buying a cotbed and I may well take one side down. He tends to sleep sideways so doesn't really fit in his cot and I'm worried his going to climb out of his cot as his already trying to (although nowhere near succeeding yet).

hm eli desperately tries to get out, i am starting to think it might be the 'trappedness' that he objects to most - he absolutely hates it and wont even sit in his cot for 5 minutes with me in the room putting clothes away....he spends half of most nights in bed with us anyway so im not sure it will make much difference

i think what im hoping is when he see its as his 'proper' bed ours wont look so appealing Laughing ho hum!

Chloe was 18 months, when we moved into this house, we put both the bed and cot up in her bedroom and after a couple of weeks she insisted on going to sleep in it and has been there ever since

Bethany is just turned 2 and half and she is still in a cot and isn't trying to climb out. We are decorating her room soon so will probably change it into bed position then x

Imogen is 20 months and we're not even considering taking the side off yet. Don't trust her to stay in bed / not fall out (see thread about duvets / grobags). I think she'd be straight over to the monitor, pull the wire out the top and stick it in her mouth. Or she'll get all the nappies out of the cupboard, all the hangers out of the wardrobe and pull the wallpaper off the walls. All incredibly silently so we didn't hear her to stop her. OR she'd be up banging on the door to get out all night. OR she'd somehow reach the door handle and go tumbling down the stairs....

No, I'm definitely not ready for it!

We did it the night of her 2nd bday.

Funny you mention trappedness. Caitlin was becoming a nightmare at bedtime, standing it cot screaming, throwing dummy/bear out etc and I was dreading taking the side off her cot bed. The reason I went ahead with it was to do the whole big girl thing before the baby comes. We did her room up all peppa pig for her bday too so she was excited to sleep in it...

Anyway I thought she would be a torture trashing the place/playing etc but nope she was fine! She does come to stair gate at room door and shout occassionally but has ALWAYS put herself back in bed and generally does not scream as much as she did in the cot. Its like she has the option to come to door, have a nosey & then potter back to bed. Not once has she fallen asleep on floor. There is also a single bed in that room and she doesnt even try and sleep on it, just gets in her low cot bed with her teddys. I have a rolled up duvet on floor purely because its tiled, the drop is literally about 20cm. I think she has fell out maybe twice but yelped for 10secs and again just climbed back in herself in a daze. (Apart from the night I heard her shouting mummy & crying and went in and couldnt find her Shocked , after 30secs of panic I found her trapped under the cot at a far corner, she'd gone dummy hunting army style and got wedged in!)

Id go for it. I dreaded it and my mum thought I was crazy as she wasnt attempting to climb out of cot really but it was def the best thing I did!

Thomas was 19 months, he wasn't climbing out or screaming etc, something just told me he was ready and I took one side off and he's been fine ever since.

I will probably do Hannah's at about the same age if I think she is ready but I'm not ready to say goodbye to my baby just yet Rolling Eyes

We put Libby in her big bed when she was 18 months, didnt know if she was ready but we'd had her new bed in its box for months and wanted to see it up Embarassed

Thankfully she took to it brilliantly, fell out a couple of times but its low so she didnt hurt herself. She NEVER gets out of bed unless we go in her room and tell her its time to get up.

We moved to her bed at 16months because i found the one i wanted really cheap and wanted to use it. She was good at first then started walking out and coming into the living room with me, it would take 2hrs to get her sleep in the bed and i was alone as Matt was working away so I gave up and put her back in the cot. So she moved properly to her bed when we moved here - she was 19months.

She has fallen out the bed a couple of times but thats been recently rather than we she first went in the bed, she's cried a bit but got straight back in bed and been fine.

Can't remember when we made the change over but I think it was when she was about 22-23 months.

Was a bit nervous about it and she did fall out a few times but I put pillows out besdide her bed so when she did fall out, she just fell asleep on the pillows, she only cried out if we hadnt noticed and she had gotten cold. We took the pillows away about a month ago and she does brilliantly.

Thought we would have the whole getting out of bed thingy but she still doesnt now. She only does that if we are sleeping away from home. She wait in her room till we say come find us, bless her.

I think she def prefers the bed, a lot more free and she really enjoys that we can sit on the bed/lay on the bed with ehr for songs and stories.

Mandy xx

with lily-ann, we moved her into a toddler bed when she was just over a year(we were using the cotbed for lewis and wanted to get her used to it) but she's never really rolled or had any problems with climbing out of bed etc(obviously)

we're considering changing lewis to a toddler bed very soon as he's trying to climb out of his cot quite a bit and when he goes up to bed he hops into lily-ann's...but currently we're a bit worried about him climbing into bed with her and inadvertantly hurting her somehow, but she's getting a height adjustable hospital style bed soon so we're waiting until then.
