Do you leave yours on at night or switch off when you go to bed. Just had a new boiler fitted and wonder if it's more cost efficient to leave it on obv on thermostat x

I turn mine off completely. Only because Im not sure how to work it lol so according to my dad the fuel pump is running constantly and it was costing an absoutefortune in electric

We have oil heating and dont have a thermostat (well not that I know of!). I just put it on 'clock' and it comes on when I want it eg tonight it went off at 10 and is coming back on for an hr at 7am to heat the place for us getting up. Id hate to wake up to a freezing house and have to wait for it to heat!

I set mine to 17.5 at night and 20 in the day ... so during the night it stays reasonable

Its an old theormostat/timer set up though - very basic you can only set it to come on and off twice in a day (so morning and night) but you have to set the temp for it to come on at on the thermostat downstairs ... which means until I go down and reset it to 20 - the house is at 17.5 ... but tbh its no bad thing as we have electric blow heaters upstairs which warm a room in 5 minutes so its never cold for long!

Ive not had my heating on for 2 days - I've just lit my fire early and it keeps the front room and downstairs snug and keeps upstairs at 18 (at the moment anyway) so for now I'm sticking with the fire cos to put the heating on all day would cost about £40 a week!

Mine goes on a off a few times a day, come on at 6am, off at 9am, on again at 2pm to warm for the kids coming home, off a 4pm, on at 8 off at 9, it would cost a fortune in gas if I kept it on all night! I usually spend around £15 a week. That'll go up when it gets colder as I have heating on almost all day then!

We kept ours on the whole time last year when Jamie was little but only because there is no thermostat and the timer's broken (which does mean it can be freezing in the morning) but unless it gets really cold as it disturbs Jamie we'll turn it off at night all year again. Mind you before Jamie was born I rarely had the heating on as I'm normally hotter than everyone else and would rather snuggle under blankets

Ours is set to 15 at night and 20 in the day, so we keep it on all the time.

Not sure if you guys have programmable thermostats..will automatically go down to the temp you set for the night..and then auto back up for the set time in the morning. We can adjust ours for vacation mode too if we are away, and if we just want it either cooler or warmer than the preset temps..just click the button to adjust. Saves money in the long run..and don't have to even think about it. xxx

Generally ours goes off at night and is set to come on at 5.30am then off at 8.30am then back on at 3.30pm and off at 10pm. But this just fits in with our working week, if we're in all day cos we're off we leave it on. When it gets very cold we leave it on at night. We also have a wood burning stove that is lit a lot of the time duri g winter which seems to heat the whole house x

OOh Milly...love our wood stove too! Nothing like wood heat on those cold cold days! It's lovely. xxx

Jen, it's great! Only one problem is as soon as it's lit it seems appropriate to get the wine out!

Ohh i cant wait to get some logs for our fire, have to get mine from costco. We normally have it on till we go to bed then turn it off. When i get up at about 6 i will turn it back on. It is getting colder of a night might be leaving it on.

Char, get ours from a farm £2 for a big bag. We can also use coal and have a coal man that delivers

ours is a programmed thermostat so comes on about 4am ish @20 degrees. then off by 7. off all day then comes back on about 6ish when I get home with kids after work, then on at 20 till 11pm then off all night till mornning again.

I miss our wood burner was lush xmas last year, all snuggled up around fire opening xmas presents and then after dinner all snuggled up watching films ahhhhhh

Usually we have it on low all day then off at night or i think when it was really cold we kept it on low just in Imogen's room

Weve got storage heaters which keeps the same temp then when it gets low it lets out heat again. Callums one is normally on but he doesnt keep his quilt on so works really z

i only put my heating on when needed and usually for a short time , this house heats up so bloody quickly xx

I just went on training at work to be the Be Green rep (aka annoying environmentally conscious one!)

The energy consultant said that the idea of saving money be keeping the heating on all the time (because you're not having to heat from cold ever) is a myth and doesn't work. He said only heat rooms when you need them, to the temperature you need them to be.

So from that, unless the cold is disturbing you at night then just set the timer to come on just before you get up so it's warm enough to get dressed, then to go off before you leave (as it will be cooling but not cold by the time you go). Likewise for getting home / going to bed etc.

Other useful thing was about using the thermostatic controls on your radiators (if you have them) cos the temp sensor is in the knob so if there's a chair or something in front of it, it will go on the temp of the air in that space, not the temp of the room.

I thought it was interesting anyway!
