Our bathroom is the only room in our house I hate, it doesn't have a window as we're mid terrace so after you have a shower/bath it fills up with steam for hours. Wasn't so much of a problem in summer as it cleared itself in the warm weather but since it's got cold we've realised that the fan/piping to take away the steam is rubbish. It's a tiny fan, and the piping that runs through the loft to outside is metal so freezing cold up there it creates loads of condensation in the pipe which runs back down and drips out of the fan Over React Oh, and the fan is right over the toilet so you tun the risk of icy cold water dripping down the back of your neck every time you go to the loo Evil or Very Mad

And because the steam doesn't clear, mould grows really easily - we have to wipe it off once every week/10 days or so Evil or Very Mad We had an electrician out today who confirmed it was rubbish, and would cost loads to fix so don't know if the landlord would fork out.. although he blimmin well should! We need a new cooker as well, so I don't think our landlord is going to have a very happy xmas, poor guy!

In the mean time is there anything we can do to make it better? I try to leave the bathroom door open and an upstairs window open to let the steam out but it's tough to do that sometimes and it makes the bedroom freezing so noah can't nap Sad Dehumidifiers are too expensive for us right now, we do have a small oil filled radiator we could put in there for a couple of hours in the evening but would that help?

you can make a bleach/water solution and wash the walls with it to get rid of the mold, you can also get 'moisture traps' for really condensation-y places from lakeland, they are about a fiver but might be worth having one or two in there......be warned though!!! it is calcium chloride so you must have somewhere little hands can't get near it (i burned my wrist on it?!!). your landlord might see that rather than having to redecorate/having rotten walls/ceilings/floor etc he might be cheaper just getting a better fan though in the long run

You need a bigger bathroom exhaust fan. You can pick them up at just about any hardware/home improvement store and shouldn't cost too much. The one you have is probably way too small for the room, which is very common. We had to replace both of ours to a mid speed..but for bathrooms without a window..a high speed exhaust fan should defo help hun. xxx

Thanks Mari, that's a good idea, I'll get some moisture traps in then. We've got a spray that gets rid of the mould really well, it just keeps coming back, grr Evil or Very Mad Never mind, I won't let it defeat me! Laughing completely agree about it on the long run, the water drips down onto the cistern and is making the wall behind the cistern damp, there's no way we can get behind the cistern to clean it so he's going to have problems if he doesn't do something!

Thanks Jen, the electrician who looked at it for us said a proper fan would cost over £100, but the one we had was a tiny one which would have cost about £12. bit of a difference there! Rolling Eyes I'm looking forward to calling the estate agents tomorrow and nagging them about it Laughing

Holy crap that's expensive hun! Does that include his install price...or just the cost of the fan? It's super easy to put one in..even I can do it! Laughing And..it's your landlords problem..use words like - mold..health hazard..babies..and hopefully that will get him on it asap. Only other thing I can suggest if using the shower..keeping the bathroom door open for ventilation...til it's fixed. The exhaust hose shouldn't drip back in either once it's fixed if the fan has enough ooomph power to blow it all out. xxx

Our bathrooms awful for that. You can buy little dehumidifiers really cheaply and they do take quite a lot of water out the air

Yes, I was going suggest a dehumidifier. We don't have the problem here but we have an apartment in Cyprus which really suffers in the winter as the tenant dries all her washing inside and doesn't open the windows. We got a humidifier which sorted the problem straight away.
Hope you get it sorted x
