breastfeeding and weight gain _
PostSubject: breastfeeding and weight gain   breastfeeding and weight gain EmptyTue Jan 10, 2012 10:26 am

I've been having Thomas' weight monitored because he lost a lot to start with when he was in scubu and I'm a bit paranoid about it! Anyway I took him to get weighed today and he's only put on 7 oz in 2 and a half weeks which seems rubbish to me Sad The hv said she's quite happy with him and he looks very happy and healthy and I said I was concerned that I wasn't feeding him enough as he started sleeping through after his 11pm feed from about 8 weeks. She basically told me every other mum she'd seen today was concerned that their babies weren't sleeping through so stop worrying but I can't help it! So basically how much weight does/did your lo put on when they were breastfeeding and little? Does this sound normal or not? Thankies x

Aww it's worrying when they sleep and worrying when they don't isn't it! Know exactly how you feel! Just checked Noah's red book, and here's his numbers..

at birth 6lb9
after 1 week 7lb1 (gained 5oz in one week)
at 3 weeks 9lb1 (gained average 14oz per week?)
11 weeks 13lb9 (gained av 8oz per week)
23 weeks 16lb3 (gained av 3oz per week)

God I hope I got the maths right, that really confused me!! Laughing There was a big drop off in Noah's weight at his last check up, so from when he was Thomas' age to the age he is now he was putting on much less every week, but the hv said that was really normal in bf babies, so not to worry. So Thomas could be approaching that stage? It's so difficult with weight as there's all the growth spurts etc to deal with, it's confusing. If he doesn't seem hungry or upset I'd think he'd getting exactly the right amount for him. And if he's sleeping through he must be very content! Smile Maybe he's about to have a big growth spurt?

I hope that helps, sorry if I've just confused you more!

I think thats about wick they're supposed to put on. The thing I read said they're supposed to double their weight by 6 months.

Jamie obviously put on loads because he shot off the top of the graph. He put on 3lb every two weeks for a while then 2 lb every two weeks. He slowed down massively around 6 months though and only put on half a pound in over two months. I think he is an exception though and wouldn't base weight gain on him

All babies are different, I have 2 complete opposites and both were (still are in Dexter's case) - their weight gain in the first weeks are:

Libby

Born at 7lb 7

5 days old 6lb 13 (lost 10oz)

10 days old 6lb 14.5 (gained 1.5 oz)

15 days old 7lb 6 (gained 7.5oz)

3 weeks old 7lb 9 (gained 3oz)

at a month old 8lb 4 (gained 11oz)

By the time she was Thomas' age (at 10 weeks) she weighed 10lb 2 so had only gained 2lb 11

Dexter

Born at 7lb 14

3 days old 7lb 2 (lost 12oz)

5 days old 7lb 8 (gained 6oz in 2 days Shocked )

9 days old 7lb 14.5 (gained 6.5oz)

11 days old 8lb (gained 1.5oz)

17 days old 8lb 9 (gained 9oz)

Again at Thomas' age (10 weeks) he was 12lb 10 so had gained 5lb 8!!

There is literally only about 3lb between them now Shocked Laughing

I agree with Kat though, if he's sleeping through he must be content and if the HV isnt concerned then I honestly wouldnt be hun, as you can see ^^ they are all different xxx

heya, i can't get to elijah's red book just now but i do remember he was 7lb 5oz and dropped to 6lb 10oz in the first week, he was on the 9th centile, he then took until he was just over 4 weeks to get back to his birth weight (he was healthy, but jaundiced and sleepy).

i do remember his weight gain being very slow and he was 9th centile until he got to 6 months and weaning (and the jaundice didn't go completely until near 5 months) and he bounced up to 50th centile.....couldn't tell you what he is now but my cupboards are bare Laughing

Awen used to gain 3oz a week too hon and it drove me scatty, they were weighing her weekly at one point but in the end they just said she obv just gained that amount and it was just her. Also once i started weaning her she jumped a whole line and started following that instead. He sounds like he is doing ok but i know how much it can be a worry

I dont have my red book to hand so cant tell you the weights, but i know leo never lost any at all when he was born...infact he gained 8lb at 3days old lol then he gained quite a lot and always stayed more or less on the 50th centile
Oliver on the other hand, went from 8.2 at birth to 7.4 at 2 days old...them gained ok till 15 weeks and just stopped gaining much weight for a good couple of months...the line in the red book went streight for a while till he settled between the 9th and 25th centile where he has remained ever since...hv wasnt worried when he stopped gaining much weigt and i read its quite normal in bf babies x

It sounds good to me. I'll put H weight up after I finished feeding her. But she lost a lot of weight after being born, almost 2lbd I think it was and it took her I think 10 days to gain it back

Thanks everyone, I'm just not used to having such a little baby! Stephen has always been on the 98th centile for height and weight so having a baby between th 9th and 25th is scaring me a bit! I also had loads of problems with Stephen and feeding so he had to go on formula at 4 months as I just wasn't producing enough for him, I just don't want that to happen again! I'll try and stop worrying and see how he's got on next weigh in. Thank you xx
