I've had the same Dyson since buying my first house in 2005 and it's still going strong and I LOVE it! I love how you can switch from upright to hose without any faffing around so you can effectively go around with one in each hand for super-efficiency. We had a man out to service it (from Dyson) when it was 6 years old and got all new filter, attachments etc, just for the sake of it really and I'd be very surprised if it didn't last to its 10th birthday.

We have 2 cats and even though it's just the bog-standard version it has no problem coping with the enormous quantities of fur they give off, nor my carpet of shed hair that falls out of my head in the bedroom each week.

The only downsides to the Dyson are:
- it's quite heavy for carting up and down stairs
- when you use the hose attachment for more than a couple of minutes, the upright bit seems to leave a line of dust on the carpet where it's been stood
- the hose is quite elastic and sometimes if you pull too hard the main part falls over which isn't a problem really, just annoying if it lands on the hose as less air can get through it.

We also had a bagless upright vax for upstairs, which was OK but it died when I hoovered my bedroom a little while ago (above stated hair-shedding - got wrapped round the rollers and upset the motor). I think the upright function was very good and it got up to edges quite well, but to convert it to using hte hose bit you have to undo a bit at the bottom and attach the hose on, which you then have to reverse to go back to upright cleaning - so there's no quick swapping from one to the other for people (like me) with cluttered floors, rugs/small furniture that need moving round etc.

Both of these however are a million times better than any cylinder type hoover with bag that I've ever used, where I've been effectively scrubbing the cat hair out of the carpet with the brush bit and then scraping it off and shoving it up the hose in order to get all the pet hair out. I had one of these when I lived in a shared houe with 5 boys and OMG it was a full-day job to sort out the house!

We have a Meille cat and dog, it's ok but uses bags, so really pees me off of that I have to keep buying them.

We've had 2 dysons, first one just died the second I murdered by hoovering up hot ash out of the fire grate, we watched the little fire in the glass bowl thing, kids couldn't stop laughing!

the one we have solves that, i can drag it round with elijah under one arm still haha i think its this one (erm its this shape anyway but i thought it was a pet one?) http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/dyson-dc19-multi-floor-bagless-vacuum-cleaner-09469376-pdt.html?srcid=867&cmpid=comp~Google~Home%20Appliances~09469376&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=xwpllwxl&istBid=t&gclid=CNmVhoGO560CFYl9fAodUkAu9Q
