We've just applied for a decreasing and a level term assurance policies as we've just switched mortgages. Anyway we had a letter today saying that I will need to be examined by a medical expert, I was wondering if it will cause any problems that I'm pregnant? I don't really want to delay the processing of the policy til after the baby is born but I don't want them to take my current health as being the norm (if that makes sense) I think this is all coming about because my brother was diagnosed with diabetes when he was about 25ish (although the docs think it was due to a virus damaging his pancreas - not hereditary). Sorry rambled a bit there Anyone know? Thank you xx

hi hun, any pregnancy related problems that wont continue after the birth wont affect the underwriting, just make sure the doctor makes clear in their report what problems are pregnancy related.

They want you to have a physical exam for a mortgage life insurance? Usually they just ask the basic questions like - do you smoke..have any chronic diseases etc. I don't think pregnancy will increase your premiums.

Ah Mandy, thank you - I was hoping you would see this So they will still examine me then? The only things really that I am concerned about are the weight (as obviously I weigh more at the moment and certainly will by the time I'm examined) and my brother's diabetes. I'm worried that they will see me as higher risk and increase the premiums quoted. x

Jen - they only do if your close family have problems. They won't increase the premium because of pregnancy but they may if they think I'm higher risk of developing diabetes

Sorry about your bro Susan..diabetes sucks! The odds of two siblings getting (unless identical twins) is rare. Diabetes and heart disease runs rampant on both sides of our family..and it has never affected our premiums. Your doc may just have to provide a note giving you a clean bill of health instead of you having to be examined by an insurance agency's doctor. xxx

Thanks Jen, unfortunately though they are insisting that I be examined by their medical expert (at their cost though - too right, buggered if I'm paying for it!!!). xx

they'll use your weight pre pregnancy, not current, and as long as you've got no signs of diabetes it should be fine. If they do load your premium for any reason you feel wont exist after pregnancy you can ask them to re-underwrite the policy after you've given birth x
