Well as some of you know we moved back to England from Cyprus last Dec. Lukes was running his Mam & Dads bar out there and thats the only job he had ever had (hes only 21 ) Since moving back hes found it really hard to get work but has been labouring for an agency in the hope that a company will take him on and train him up, but no such luck yet.
He really wants to learn a trade but going back to college isnt really an option as we couldnt afford to live.
So, what do you Ohs do for a living? How did they get into it?
Lukes defo not an office type btw, he want to do a manly type of job
But just struggling to get into it

My OH used to work in the job centre signing people on, he then got promoted doing some IT job in their head office, now he has just moved to company house as he is designing a programme to be used in all job centres

Gav is a Joiner. His dad is a Joiner and his brother is a bricky. Like Luke Gav has never been an office kinda guy. Wearing a suit is his worst nightmare.

Gav started an apprentiship when he was 18 where he went to college and worked at the same time. He trained for 2 yrs and has now been working fully trained for about 7 yrs. He works for a construction company and earns a decent wage of £25k a yr.

The only thing i would say is the construction industry is really badly affected by the recession atm. Gav was out of work for a yr which was really hard. Also, most places if he is labouring require a CSCS card which i think u have to get through training.

Maybe he could look into an apprentiship. I think you can do them up until the age of 22. Do you have a Connexions near you? Maybe they could give him some advice?

My oh works for a company that has mainly blood and other random products sent in from other countries and they repack and send it off to cancer research, aids research.. that kind of thing. The company has expanded now and he's a lab technician now (in Bedfordshire ), and deals with the invoicing and ordering too. He's not an office guy and sort of fell into this job, he replied to loads of job ads& sent cvs to a million and one companies a couple of years ago. The company got back to him and he went for an interview & didn't actually know what he was interviewing for but he got the job and since then he's done so well.
I really hope Luke finds something decent soon.
Oh and just to be clear there is no animal testing involved in Matt's job... in case anyone gets upset.

Amy he has a CSCS card already and hes has done a 4month course to able to work on site. But he doesnt want to be a Labourer forever. I feel so guilty, i would love for him to get able to college to get the qualification needed. I just wish a small company would take him on as an apprentice, we could manage if he got paid crap at least its something and it would be worth it in the end. He spent weeks going through the yellow pages and ringing every company up bless him but has had no luck. His dad was a bit of a handy man and done all sorts of building work i think Luke wants to do the same

My ohs a deputy Manager in corals betting shop and he loves it xx
He went in jus for a cashier role but they offered him deputy manager as theey were impressed with his maths and knowledge of sport lol xx

my other half is a horticultural groundsman he kind fell into it as he was a valeter for years!1 he knwo holds a chainsaw licence and and chemicals thingy.. but he still wants to do something different x

Carla thats the background luke comes from his grandad owned betting shops all over the north east then he retired and some them all to william hills!

Opps i meant he sold them to corals, he had 22 betting shops

Neil is a windscreen fitter he works for autoglass.

My OH is a Project Manager for Nationwide Building Society... office based, so unfortunately I cant offer much advice.

myOH is an ODP/department sister! (or i call him brother)

my hubby is a student nurse, he was a body piercer for years so obviously blood and gore is his thing

Simon is a postman and has been for the last 13 years!! He does love it though and the best thing is he finishes at about half 11 everyday so I get to go to work from 1 til 5. xx

Matt's an accountant, very boring (his job, not him)

my OH is a firefighter (control)

my partner was mediclly discharged from the RAF ,, at the minute he is supervisor in supermarket as he has no idea what he wants to do now , the raf was his life
he did get his cscs ) sp ) card a few months back x

Dan is an architect, he works for himself now - he qualified the year after we got together so 5 years ago, he was 23 then. Although he had been working in practice while studying so he was very experienced which is why he went on his own 3 years ago.
He works from home now and earns a decent penny, picks his own hours, can go play squash when he wants, goes away on holiday when he wants (always takes the laptop for work though )
Wouldn't be an option for your OH though seeing as its an officey job!

mines works for HMRC / Tax Stuff. Mainly Self Employed

My OH works for the council dealing with council tax and housing benifit. Wouldn't recomend it, all he gets is a load of abuse of people when he tries to help them out

Mine works on the council, doing road maintenance, cleans up roads if been an accident (not nice he tells me! So blurgh things) all that crap..... But everytime I ring him no matter the time he's on a 'break' so he really is a 'shovel holder' x

mines a IT person, he is in charge of a huge national companies fire wall and internet security....

but he gets called all hours and weekends if there is a problem, allthough the overtime is good.

hun if he signs on they will send him to a course at college as part of signing on and he will get trained, my cousin just doing a plumbers course this way, might be worth looking into
