Found out today that my Grandad has fallen over and broken his hip - he was in a care home and not well anyway with parkinsons, they think he had a stroke too.

Anyway he is in hospital in a coma and they have said he won't pull through - they aren't feeding him through a pipe so I can't see it being long :-(

I'm off to see him this afternoon to say goodbye

Ahhhh Lisa - that is heartbreaking. My Grandad died last year after a fall he never recovered so I know how you are feeling.

I don't think he is suffering, he stopped eating - well he hadn't been eating much for a long time and was a bag of bones, so he wouldn't need to miss many 'meals' to go down hill, I think thats why he went into a coma.

They were going to operate on his broken hip but given his bad condition they decided there wasn't any point, same with the feeding - would just prolong the inevitable which wouldn't be of any benefit to him at all.

Me and my mum went to see him, we are pretty disgusted and really upset.

My nan, who has power of attorney over him, who hasn't even been to see him since he broke his hip, decided along with his doctor that the hospital are not to give him medication and not to feed him on a line - he is basically being left on a bed with not much care to die - starve to death.

He isn't even in a decent ward - he is on the orthopaedic ward with people who have broken bones, the whole thing was shocking

All he is getting for his pain is paracetamol, he has an infection in his one arm from the line he had in there - AND get this...my auntie who is an auxiliary nurse at our local hospital noticed they had the leg trough thing on the wrong *$%£ leg! The nurse had to go away to check , came back and said yes its on the wrong one - she pulled it out from the ok leg which was bleeding from rubbing, and she just shoved it under his leg that has a broken hip - my grandad (not in a coma just not with it, cant talk, eyes closed etc) shouted *$%£ hell as she did it as it obviously it really hurt him - they are the only words he has said since it happened

How can my nan make that decision to stop food and medication - she hasn't even visited him - its just wrong.

God Lisa! The only thing you can legally do, is get a court order..which by the time it can go into effect, it will probably be too late. I am sickened that she won't give him morphine, to ease it. Basically, cutting off all fluids and food will - what we were told this with Shayne's mom, will induce a state of euphoria...where they don't feel any pain during the last bit. The man does deserve some dignity at least during this last bit of his life. How awful for you and your family!

Awww hunni I am totally disgusted for you too! Your Grandad deserves the best care what ever the outlook for him is! I hope you manage to get things sorted out for him!
