Do you send christmas cards? Do you like getting christmas cards? Who do you send to? etc etc I LOVE cards! I could spend days and days in clintons and not get bored. I love to give and receive special cards from special people (parents, partner, kids, family etc) and would rather have a nice card for my birthday than a present. However!!! I just don't 'get' christmas cards. Friends and close family is cool - don't mind that - but neighbours? work colleagues? distant cousins/aunts? the bin man/paperboy? etc etc? WHY? (probably sound like a right scrooge? ) I'm just waiting on OH writing down his list for work which I will have to sit down and write from us and the kids when I have never even met most of them My nanna sends over 300 christmas cards every year She sends to people she hasn't seen for over 20 years but they "keep in touch by christmas card" . I was in Clinton last night looking for cards and they have 'special' ones to the usual family members as well as 'to the dog/cat' , teacher, teaching assisstant, carer, childminder, from your secret admirer - you get the picture AND - having kids doubles the number of cards you have to buy. I now buy my mum and dad as well as sending then a 'nanna and grandad' one, my nannas who i then have to find a 'great nanna' ones for (not an easy thing to find - believe me), my brother who gets an 'uncle' one too, OHs daughter gets a 'daughter' one as well as a 'sister' one and obviously OH who also gets a Daddy one. That is just my side of the family. Do you buy for your kids (babies)? Is there any point in me buying a 'Son'/'Daughter' card for my LOs so I can write them, seal them, open them, put them up for no one to see as we aren't having any visitors over christmas. Probably not - so why do I feel guilty for not getting them one? AND if I get them one from us do I then get them a 'sister'/'brother' one from each other? wtf? Is it just me who feels this way? Please tell me I'm not a complete scrooge - I LOVE christmas, love giving presents, love the whole tree/decorations/christmas dinner thing - just cards that get on my nerves. xx

i think theyre a waste, nice for family and close friends but not everyman and his dog, there's close to 300 at my work and a few years back everyone decided not to send cards but donate £2 each and give to a local charity.

| I feel the same. I only ever really give them to close family. Not really even friends. Matt's parents are always bugging me before christmas to send cards to this person/that person but some I haven't even met or only seen once, it's just pointless. Matt's mum sends out hundreds of cards. She writes a newsletter (the Hampstead Herald) that includes what the whole family has been up to this year. I think it's funny but I can't be bothered with that. What I always think is weird is that my Grandads gets us all individual card (special grandaughter, special great grandaughter, special grandson in law etc) and posts them to us... but we see him on or around Christmas. I just don't get why he can't hand them to us? it's a waste of time/postage. He's proper weird about christmas cards though, he uses a ruler to make sure the address is straight on the envelope. As for children, I don't bother buying any for Imogen to give someone. I make something with her to give. Last year we made cards with her footprint and a santa hat on. This year we're making these cards.. http://www.mylittlerembrandt.com/i/Christmas%20Cards/a_christmas_cards_made_from_childs_artwork.jpg and some biscuits. I think we got her a card that said on your first christmas last year but I don't think i'll bother this year. All it is is something to put in her baby book really. She won't understand. xx

Haha Debs, you have a BIG opinion on them I could take them or leave them really, before Libby was born I made xmas cards myself and really enjoyed it but now dont have the time (well, cant be arsed more like ). I havent made my mind up about getting Libby one although I did print one off from the Disney Playhouse website and she's been playing with it. I dont bother getting parents one from us then one from Libby - seems like such a waste of money. With regards to neighbours - I dont see the point either but they are all elderly so we pop one through the door because they do Luckily I only work with 3 people so thats nice and simple and Simon doesnt bother with his colleagues because he said he hates some of them but would feel bad for giving to some but not others I do send one to family abroad though. So basically we probably send about 30 cards a year xxx

i kind of find that christmas cards are a way of asserting your status and that of others around you - at work for example (or school, if theres a difference ), who you do and dont give cards to and who does or does not give a card back impedes or strengthens your relationship in some small but definite way - it re-affirms the hierarchy of whichever group you are part of: choosing not to send someone a christmas card is like a political statement of dislike! therefore i either send everyone a card wether i like them or not (hm time consuming and wasteful) or nobody a card and people manage to take offense...happily my family and husband couldnt give a flying **** either way

Omg, I could have written this post myself! lol! I love cards for pretty much any occasion, but christmas, pah, they drive me insane!!!! My mum has decided to give £50 to the National Heart Foundation rather than waste the money on buying and sending cards. I have decided to copy her and do the same - which reminds me that I need to update my FB status so that people dont get offended! (im sure there will always be somebody). x

Ahem!! Treleaven - I want a card! I want a huge 'special' one "to my bestest friend in the whole wide world and her OH and babies" (hehe wonder if clintons stock that one? ) - with glitter and ribbons the whole shebang! and I will be mortally offended if you don't send me one! Seriously though hun - don't dare send me one - I will feel the need to send you one back which I can't be arsed to do - hence the reason for my rant in the first place I guess people will only be offended for one year then they will come to expect the bah humbug attitude from me? hhmm? I love the charity idea actually - although certain members of my family still wouldn't accept that - my nanna would honestly never speak to me again if I didn't send her a card from both myself and Paul and a seperate one from the kids and god forbid I get her a Grandma one and not a nanna . A card sent under protest just doesn't have the same sentiment though eh? Mari - I like your way of thinking xx

I don't send christmas cards, after many many years of writing them and either forgetting to give them out or not having people about to give them too I've given up!

Have to agree with what you said Debs. At other times of the year i love cards, and think they are very important, but at Christmas it all seems a bit pointless. The thing is i feel to guilty not to send one. I like the idea of those charity cards, where you donate rather than doing a whole office at work. I managed to write a whole 3 cards earlier before getting distracted! I do like buying special ones for the girls, and any babies who have their first Christmas, etc. I just feel it all hangs over my head. It's not like DH will sit there and write them, or buy them or post them. And his mother would be seriously put out if i/we didn't do their family. Ugh, yawn! x x x
