not impressed with dentist ! _
PostSubject: not impressed with dentist !   not impressed with dentist ! EmptySat Jan 15, 2011 5:30 am

My children had a check up must be near 5 months ago now ( their next check up is due mid feb )

obviously D's teeth were all fine
My middle child ( 9) required extraction of a baby tooth , he was in agony when she was removing it Sad
My oldest ( 11 )who fears loads needed work done , the dentist told me he required x amount of fillings and extractions , adult teeth included !
i was spitting mad and enforced a ban on sweets and juice and threatened him with the fact i would start brushing his teeth for him like he was a baby again and told him he would lose all his teeth by time he is 16
his dentist ( i might add was a bit of a cow with him the kind of person that causes children to fear dentists ) refused to treat him for 6 months to see if she could see a differance in his brushing abilities
last week he was in pain so i made an emergency appointment for him, in the waitin room i see a big poster up stating that the 2 dentists that worked there decided not to come back after xmas eve ,,
there was a man there from the sister practice over an hour away , he is coming in 2 times a week tll replacemnts start in feb
he was so flipping lovely !!!!!! the minute he went to look in my sons mouth he realised my son was shit scared so he took it ever so gently ,,, yes my son still needs work done but after discussion with him the previous dentist told me a load of bollocks ! ,,,, not one of his adult teeth require work at all ( this does not make it right in any way or form as better care should have been taken of his baby teeth ) but im so relieved !
over next couple of weeks we should get an appointment for the hospital , he is going to be put to sleep to have his babies removed

I found that when I was younger! NHS dentists will do work that isn't required!

I had 2 fillings while I was in college and probably needed anther yet when I moved to a Private dentist he said my teeth were prefect!

I wonder if they get bonus/commission for work...so rather than just do a check-up and say all is ok they say people need fillings, whereas a private dentist gets paid a decent amount for a checkup anyway so doesnt need to con folk?!

There are shoddy lying cheating dentists everywhere! Shayne's mouth is a prime example. ALL his teeth were drilled and filled as a child. Most offices will show you their xrays to point out any work that needs to be done now days. If you feel like something isn't right, I always tell ppl to go and get a second opinion from another dental office. Just recently in town here, we had the exact same problem with a dentist for Matthew. I was soooo livid I called up the office and flipped out. They were charging us for fillings that weren't even done on his teeth. A few days later, Shayne(LOL they were too afraid to call me) receives a phone call on his cell phone from the office expressing their deepest apologies and have given us a credit for any work to be done next time as it was a "clerical" error on their behalf. I am so reluctant to take him back there and we fortunately found a fabulous dentist for Madisyn out of town who did all the work required on her plus more!

Totally standard to give kids xrays..otherwise how can they determine how deep the cavities are? They could be just superficial pitting on the teeth that is remedied by just a quick non freezing fissure sealant..or may be incredibly deep that would require a pulpectomy(baby tooth root canal) It's very unprofessional to advice patients about work to be done when there are no xrays to back it up! Not only that, it's important to see how far beneath the permanent teeth are and if all is developing normally. I would hate to pay for a full on composite filling on a baby molar to only have it fall out in a month. I have worked for a shoddy dentist..and was disgusted by what I saw. Didn't stay there very long. Most dentists will offer a treatment plan..or if they don't I highly recommend asking for one to be printed off. I would then take the same treatment plan to another office to get their opinion..and I am pretty much 100% positive..it will be a total different outcome. xxx

wow ,,, took me 3 years to get them in at dentist ,,, there were NONE here taking on anyone Sad ,,,if in pain you could go to hospital for emergency ,,, so imagine getting into a new dentist will be hard Sad

they both had fissure sealant done on their teeth to protect them in future ,,, i was advised this was normal procedure ?

we dont pay for childrens dental care so i guess they culd be milking the money out the government ?

Jen the NHS dentists here are often quite pants!

When I was 11 my dentist removed 4 perfectly healthy adult teeth instead of the 4 baby teeth he should have removed next to them. No xray was ever taken.

It wasn't til I ended up with 4 gaps that my mum questioned it..so got a solicitor, the NHS dentists clinic sent the wrong notes (for another child), then said my records had gone...then eventually found the notes and said NO WAY had he removed adult teeth. They were rather red faced when my mum presented them with all the teeth that had been removed from my mouth!

I had to have traintracks to pull all my teeth a whole space forward, was too painful for me (was 17) and couldn't finish it so had to have 4 maryland bridges put there

They paid up £10k compensation but to be perfectly honest I'd have rather kept my teeth and not had all the hassle!

The NHS ended up paying thousands to private experts and dentists to fix it...all because 1 dentist didn't bother to check which teeth he was pulling!

Yes..and btw..you can request to look at your dental charts to see what they have billed your NHS. Fissure sealants are normal procedure..but..xrays are usually taken before they are applied because if there is a cavity..and one is place over it..the tooth will still decay under it. Over here..if you don't have private insurance..you pay out of pocket for everything. I can tell ya..getting a surprise dental bill for 900 dollars right before Christmas was disgusting for fillings that were NOT done on my son. Also..most dentists follow a standard fee guide..and sometimes add a percentage on top to cover expenses. It would be sooo easy to bilk NHS if no one is watching over dentists! Here..before any extensive work is done..most plans require you to send a preauthorized treatment plan for them to review before it would be covered. Little more tricky for dentists to scam..but for ppl like us..who pay cash..we are prime for the pickings! xxx

Yup he should...but he carried on practising as a child dentist for a long time...was still there when the case ended 10 years he did it...yup it took til I was 21 for it to end!

He probably never even knew what happened as it would have been dealt with by the legal and insurance people!
