| I had the misfortune to watch the opening sequence of ITNG this evening and I won't be doing it again. Wil watches Waybaloo and that is bad enough but ITNG opening sequence is completely hypnotic and designed to lure kids in. It makes me mad that the TV companies think that it is acceptable to do this to children. Needless to say we will be switching off before it starts in future. BTW the soap operas do it too, amongst other programmes for adults. |

| Caitlin loves it. The start doesnt really interest her that much its when upsy daisy comes on or the blinking ball that she gets excited! I dont really mind her having a fave tv show and getting excited about the characters -at xmas she danced with joy when she got an upsyy daisy doll and ITNG backpack. I thought it was cute! |

| It doesn't work on Izzy...she isn't bothered by it at all
Soaps don't work on me either, I CAN NOT stand soaps, don't remember the last one I ever watched on purpose!
I have sometimes left the channel on and Eastenders comes on and I can hear it playing from any room and think OMFG what is that noise, people always yelling at each other! |

| It's the language, pitch and tones they use. In basic terms it overloads your conscious mind and creates a path directly to your subconscious. They can then put stuff into your subconscious without you even knowing it is there. |

I'm never going to be able to watch eastenders without thinking about my suboncious now Yeh thats what they want ...don't really want your kids being hooked on TV though lol! Thankfully the only thing Izzy asks to watch is Nelly and Caeser..although the way she is always yelling 'Caeser' at me through the day I am wondering if that has special powers! |

| I dont really want Caitlin hooked on tv, but at risk of sounding like the bad mum... I dont really mind her having a couple of fav tv shows even if she is just 19mths. Its not like they reeling her in and then encouraging bad behaviour. She enjoys it, quite often there is a nice messgae eg helping/sharing/learning about up & down etc. I know I can teach her these lessons myself but I dont see the harm in tv helping out. A lot of people can be against tv but use pc/internet learning programs - is there much difference? (I may be ignorant as Caitlin only uses internet to watch a bob the builder video on youtube ) I can see how the start of ITNG may be hyptnotic, but then most kid tv shows have a theme tune that grabs attention. Caitlin I know watches too much tv, and I am cutting it down a bit, but thats because im trying to do more activities outside the home (2moro we going to gymnastics for the 1st time - the centre was actually used in mighty mites episode ), not because im worried about her subconcious. Im probably they type of mum thats a marketers dream |

| I really don't see the problem in kids watcing tv as long as you aren't using the tv as a fulltime childminder, where is the harm? I enjoy tv so it makes sense that kids would lol |

| I've always had an interest in this type of media psychology. Its the same with adverts, like you said Gill, its all about carefully chosen music, repetitive images and one liners that grab your attention. I think with the kids tv, its no different, they obviously do it for ratings. Take the teletubbies for instance. Do you remember the massive hype when they first appeared 12 years ago?? The people that wrote that knew exactly how childrens minds worked. They knew that a todllers attention span was about 4 seconds ( or something like that) so the different scenes werent that long so that they would get bored. Is it a bad thing?? Well alot of kids programmes now are very educational and if Cerys is drawn to these then I dont have a problem. I would prefer her to watch things like Mr Tumble or Ballamory which have real people in them rather than an animated cartoon. But I agree with snoopy and olliesmammy, it should never be used to replace one to one learning and playing with family and toys etc. I read somewhere that some researchers had proved that tv "re-wires" childrens brains i.e the fundamental connections in the brain for speech and learning are affected and dont develop fully. There is so much written about tv and childrens development (often conflicting) that I believe it entirely up to the parent on what they think is appropriate xx |
