| Right, this is in NO way getting at single people (I think you'll know that when you read it lol) BUT some people expect everything to be done for them in life and if what I put below is true then OMFG how stupid! Convo on FB: A girl posts to say 'Easy to fit lindam baby gate my ass!!!!! Not impressed!!! ' And someone replies with 'your a single mum the council should be out fitting you gates' Please tell me this isn't true?! |

| I would think it highly unlikely they council would do something like that! But then there are people out there who try and get everything for nothing so who knows! |

| oh dear you guys are going to be shocked
if the child is a child in need or there are concerns, then the counicl as a duty to ensure the child is protected and will pay for safety equipment, and beds etc.
however due to budgets this is now being tightened and things are difficult to get hold of as they were before.
but not sure on the fitting, but if the carer cannot do it, then i would assume that the counicl would need to organise someoen to do it for them.
i suppose i'd rather the gate was fitted correctly than the child having an accident
but its not because she is single parent, its about hte child and the child's needs |

| You'll probably all hate me now but our council provided and fit stairgates as standard up until a few months ago, that was to everyone including me who's neither single nor on a low income. I think that's what they're refering to xxx |

do we think its the same thing they mean?? possibly? Hey it wasnt homestart it was a rep from the council (I got mixed up!) Yes I got a stairgate and other cupboard locks but none where fitted for me! I wouldnt have expected that, I was extremely grateful for getting the safety stuff free (I havent even fitted the gate yet actually, we live in bungalow & its more to keep her in her room at night when changes to bed). The home safety check was open to ALL regardless of marital status/income/area you lived. It took over a year for them to come out as the list was so long. The best thing they did for me was contact my landlord and make them service my boiler. |

| Thinking about the fitting of it.... The one we have requires drilled in. I dont own a drill & im sure neither do quite a lot of low income famillies who live in rented houses where repairs are carried out by landlords/council. Its maybe not a case of being lazy, but a financial one. Some might not be able to afford to buy a drill to fit one stair gate/pay a handy man to do it. I can see how it seems such a waste of money, and laughable to some, but in reality it may be difficult for some people to organise. |

| It honestly has never occured to me that people would think I'm lazy for having someone fit them until I read this thread There are so many schemes here for children and families that I really think of it as the norm. I think if gates are being provided then there is nothing wrong with having someone make sure they are safe and fitted correctly. Yes my husband could have done it but I feel better knowing that a handyman who knows what he's doing has checked them and thay are safe. The scheme has gone now anyway! xxx |

| no wonder this country is over £2,000,000,000,000 in debt! FFS you can buy a pressure fix stairgate for less than £15 thats less than a month's Sky TV less than 3 packets of fags less than 6 pints of lager in a pub less than 5 bottles of very cheap wine

| I'm sorry I take offence at that! I am well aware that I could buy a stairgate and fit it myself but our council offer all new parents (or did do) free safety equipment which they take responsibility for fitting so that they know it's safe. I pay a hell of a lot of council tax so I'm going to make sure that I get my money's worth from it and I'm not ashamed of that! There are other services that I don't get because of my council that I would do if I lived elsewhere, there are different rules in different areas and always has been! I have taken responsibilty for my child's safety by making sure I had a safety visit to identify any areas that I may have missed to make the house as safe as possible for him! |

| I don't blame anyone for having it if offered, I just don't think that it should be offered in the first place. Fair enough if the country was rich and could afford it, but it seems government/local government have been spending money here there and everywhere for years and are now in such a pickle that they have to make serious cuts - stairgates might not be much money but it all counts and its the same attitude across the board as to why we are in debt, spending money they don't have. Then people moan that the government are making cuts...but some people aren't prepared to make cuts in their own life to compensate.
Thats not a dig at anyone (as per first post) its just my opinion that this country is ridiculous the way it hands things/money out. |

| I agree that the scheme shouldn't be available in these times when the country can't afford it and I agreed with it being cancelled but I just resent the implication that because I accepted the offer while it was available that somehow I'm not taking responsibility for my own child. I am also rather hormonal at the moment so apologise for ranting |
