I'm getting a bit worried about Amelia. Recently I've caught her looking a little cross eyed. I've only seen it when she's been sat about 10 ft away from the TV and is watching it. I also saw her in my rear view mirror whilst she was sat in her car seat. These are the only times I've seen her do it and it's only been in the last 3 weeks. What should I do about it? x

I think they get a routine sight test at 3...so thats too long to wait if you are concerned now!

You can take them to an optometrist apparently at any age - although Im not entirely sure how they ask them what they can see?!

yeh get her checked, I developed a squint at 3 and had corrective surgery done at 4. Have worn glasses ever since. The brain will usually work harder to correct a squint but sometimes it can do it by itself xx

Tell your hv and they can refer you to see an optometrist. I was concerned with Sophia when she was a young baby because for a while she wasnt fixing and focusing at the age she shouuld have been and told hv who made referral. Luckily she caught up before i needed to go to the appointment but thats how i know they can refer you.

I had a squint as a young child and corrective surgery at two. Not sure how they can tell, but i do remember doing strengthening exercises where i had to focus with one eye on a lion and move my eye so that the image of the lion moved into a cage. I also remember the optometrist holdong up a stick with a picture ont he top of it and moving it across my line of vision to see if i could follow it with each eye whilst shining that tiny little torch they use at my eye.

From after the surgery, I had to wear an eye patch for a few hours each day till i was about eight i think. I still have weakness in my left eye but can only tell now when i am really tired, or havent been wearing my glasses for a long while.

Hopefully she is absolutely fine but definately worth getting checked out, at the very least it will put your mind at rest.

Thank you all! I think it's mainly when she's tired but I will take her to the HV (not seen her for a year and have no idea when or where she is anymore, ops) and talk about it with her. I'd be suprised if she has anything "wrong" as both Dave and I had perfect eyesight as children, he still does and I only have a mild perscription for driving.

My mum and dad had perfect sight til they got to 50 and needed reading glasses, but I needed specs in secondary school - so you both heaving good eyes doesn't guarantee she will unfortunately - my mum made the mistake of assuming it, and when I complained she thought it was a 'phase' and I was making it up...I was 12 I think and couldn't see the board in school!
So she got me horrible NHS ones that she knew I would hate wearing - but I used to slip them on to see the board and quickly take them off when I finished.
I actually think my eyes got worse because of that - cos I strained for so long!

I got a job the summer after I left school and bought my own nice specs - I think that convinced her I was genuinely needing them and she got my contact lenses for when I started college

I agree with Lisa about it not being genetic always, my dad has perfect eyesight and my mum only needed glasses for reading when she hit 60, but I have to wear contacts every day as my eyesight is awful and has been since a teenager. Speak to your GP or HV, they'll be able to refer you.

hiya lsa, i have a squint, or another term you will hear people use is a lazy eye, because its mainly more noticeble when ur tired like you mentioned u noticed with amelia.

when i was a baby i had to wear a patch for a few hours a day and i wasnt very compliant with it. i had to wear glasses from the age of 10, and had correction surgery 5 years ago, its 99% straight now. but still apparent when im tired.

i would mention it to your gp as they would be the one to refer amelia to the optometrist to be checked over and give you advice, best to get it checked sooner rather than later, i wish mine was sorted when i was little x

Yeah i would defo get her checked out just in case.
Every single person in my family (uncle, aunts etc) all wear or should wear glasses. Im the only one with perfect vision and same on Lukes side too which is strange!

I mentioed it to my HV who reffered Abbie to the Hosp. There they did a brief 'eye test', and they couldn't decide if she has a wide bridge or if she does have a squint. So we now have to go back in May for another set of tests. I think they will dialate her pupils and look into her eyes properly.....she is not allowed to driver op operate and machinery afterwards!!!!

So yes I would def recomend to HV
