bf and alcohol _
PostSubject: bf and alcohol   bf and alcohol EmptyWed May 11, 2011 1:29 am

Following on from the under pressure thread I wondered how people feel when bf. This has come partly from a text from my friend. She's bf and drinks what she wants (which is a lot). Someone else from my antenatal class won't touch alcohol while bf. I have the occasional glass of wine (although wouldn't until i'd asked the midwife) so sit somewhere inbetween. Just wondered what other people thought. I'm not judging any of us so not wanting to start an argument

I only BF for 8 weeks but I did have a night out at about 6/7 weeks.
I fed her before I left at about 8pm, then my mum gave her a btl of ebm at about 11pm and then I gave her a 2nd btl of ebm at about 3/4am. The morning feed at maybe 7am I BF.

Id say I was quite tipsy eg 6-7 drinks after not drinking for a year so wouldnt have felt comfortable doing 3am BF. A bottle I think was safer as im sure there was some alcohol in my milk and also id have been more likely to fall asleep if I had just brought her into bed and BF as usual. I didnt pump and dump either like I read some people do. My boobs never really got full so I think I came home at about 1am and just let off a small amount before I fell asleep, btl for early feed and then latched her straight on in the morning.

I dont think there is anything wrong with 1-2 glasses of wine but def not after a night out. I suppose in an emergency you could, but if you could plan for it/express I think that would be safest.

sorry to lower the tone but I actually LOL'd at snoopys *let off a small amount* tehe

I dont agree with drinking and bf but when I say bf I mean going out on a night out and then coming home and feeding your baby. one or two glasses of wine/ or a bottle of barcadi breezer or something like that I can't see the issue with as long as it's not immediately before a bf!

I would try to express sufficient to cover the fees while I was drunk if i was planning on going out

hmmm i am quite strongly anti-alcohol in general so wouldn't have taken up drinking while bf (although i have to say at 4am the thought did cross my mind Laughing) - i would definitely not have wanted to have a drink when in charge of a little baby anyway, the responsibility would weigh too heavily on my shoulders.

i was pretty careful when elijah was little about caffiene, what i ate etc and tbh by now it's just a habit, i have one proper caffiene of the day but if now and then i fancy a can of coke or something i will just have it but i only do 3-6 bfs (at least 2 of these in desperation to get him to sleep so not a real feed haha)

anyway, short answer is similar to my 'alcohol and pregnancy' answer...it's only a little while in your life you may as well give it your all Smile

I had a Kopparberg at night once Arwyn had gone to bed, I never thought one would do her any harm. The first time I went out drinking was when she was 9 weeks old (just after her christening), she had ebm all day and I feed her that night and she slept the whole night! Laughing
but that was a one off, I didn't drink again til Christmas and then the first proper night out I had was after I'd stopped bf.
