help please - trading standards type question _
PostSubject: help please - trading standards type question   help please - trading standards type question EmptyThu Apr 07, 2011 2:47 am

ugh. so my husband (very kindly) went and got my rings resized cos i am such a fatty Laughing but within a few days of wearing my wedding band it started looking yellowy and really really scratched (it's white gold but was freshly redipped recently and only vaguely scratched).

he went back and they said ohhh your wife must have done that...i didn't! i went to ernest jones where we bought it from 2.5 years ago and they were like wtf happeed to it? its uneven and scratched and yellowed (im like i know Rolling Eyes ). so i went back to the place and had a heated discussion with their managers - they claim that a metal banister could have scratched it (all the way round???? and made one area thinner than the rest????).

we discussed it for some time and the man told me they couldn't have damaged it as they don't use tools to hold the ring while resizing (do they have nimble fingered dwarves do it?) and couldn't tell me exactly how they do it because they send the rings away - however i later discovered they do the process in store. it ended with me saying i would have to get written report of what was wrong with the ring and pursue it through trading standards.....

ohhh and the best bit is, i never checked the hallmarks before because i
never really took the ring off - but it has 'b.bros' and some other
stuff printed on it i have googled this and in fact this is the hallmark
of a wedding ring company in london.

so i need a bit of advice re: how to get a report??? any ideas? what do i do? i really don't think this is my ring. i am SO f*cked off Evil or Very Mad

Have you asked e.jones if it is one of theirs (in light of the hall marks?)
Is it an independent store you had it resized at - or could you go higher / to head office etc.?
What happened for you to find out the resizing is in store scratch because quite evidently, if they lied about that, they why would they think you'd trust the feckers on what else they said?!
Could only suggest asking the manager to put everything in writing so you can take it to trading standards - (say TS told you to do so...fibs...) maybe do like a blank form that says something like 'date resized' / 'resized by' / 'suggested reason for tarnish' / 'process of resizing' etc etc. - just to put the wind up their kilts and HOPEfully get some truth out of them??!
The buggers No

it's an independent store so can't go any higher than the patronising bloke i spoke to today. ernest jones say they can't tell just by the hallmark if it is one of theirs (boo!)

he said he would put the claim it was 100% not them in writing if i brought the receipt (hope hubby has it) and he could take pictures with a magnifier!

i told my husband that he had said they get sent away - hubby said no, i chose them because they did it instore. so i sneakily phoned and asked and she said its instore Laughing they were making out we had to have the receipt to get any info - but they remembered my hubby, and that my ring had been handed in with my engagement ring (which seems ok).......blah!

hmmm... don't suppose you recorded the phone call at all? Suspect Laughing
It would have been an idea to, and at the end of the call say - "sorry, what's your postcode again for my sat nav... and it's xyz (name) shop, right?" then you'd have them recorded as saying it's in store, and in writing from the numpty bloke that it's "sent away"... should be enough to either get them to 'fess up or take to trading standards?
Argh one of those things you could do without eh!

Is it fixable? Or is that not the point, you actually think it's not yours? Can you get it valued at all - just for peace of mind? OR if you have home insurance you may be able to claim on that (I'm not sure what you'd claim though...?!)

Clutching at straws, in summary - I have no clue Cool

i didnt grace Laughing i should have - ideally someone would have taken minutes in the shop but unfortunately i didn't have any allies with me.

i will just wait and see about the hallmark - e.jones said to fix it it would need to be replated and they aren't sure how you could fix the 'thin' bit where it was resized sooooooooo i will contact trading standards when i hear about the hallmark, and hopefully they can help me get an independent inspection done
